  • What do animals do in Winter?

By Renata G. Berger
2
It had been a long winter and Annies pet cat,
Taffy, had run away. She wanted to find a new
pet so she put corncakes at the edge of the
forest to help attract a new friend.
Lots of animals dropped by to sample Annies
tasty treats.

5
Monarch Butterflies migrate.
Migrate
Some animals visit other places when the seasons
change. This is called migration.
When winter comes its hard to find food. So
animals travel to keep from going hungry.
6
Brown bats hibernate. They may sleep for up to
eight months.
Hibernate
Some animals like to spend the winter sleeping.
Sort of like we do on a cold morning when we pull
the covers up over our heads and stay in bed.
When an animal hibernates its temperature drops
and its breathing gets slower.
7
Whales get a thick layer of blubber or fat that
helps keep them warm when the waters become cold.
Insulate
To surround yourself with things that will keep
the heat in and the cold out.
We put on a coat to insulate us during the winter
. Animals carry their insulation with them
everywhere they go. They fluff up feathers or
fur and they are ready when the cold wind blows.
8
Generate
When you feed the birds during the winter you
help them generate the heat they need for winter.
When you generate something you make it or cause
it to come into being .
All living things make or generate heat. We make
ourselves warm when our bodies use the food we
eat as fuel.
9
Bees congregate to keep warm.
Congregate
When you congregate you gather together in a
group.
Sometimes smaller animals will huddle close
together to keep warm. Often animals that like
to be alone will huddle with other animals in
the winter months to keep warm.
10
Spiders lay eggs in order to propagate. The
baby spiders chew out of their egg sac in the
spring.
Propagate
Propagate means to lay eggs or have live babies.
Some animals propagate or have babies before the
cold weather can kill them. Insects and spiders
lay eggs and the new babies can Survive during
the winter months.
