Title: Effects of Cryogenic Environment on Reliability of Electronic Components
1Effects of Cryogenic Environment on Reliability
of Electronic Components
Description
FY08 Plans
In this work several types of simple
microcircuits, passive components (capacitors,
resistors, wires and cables), and assemblies will
be subjected to cryogenic environments in the
range of temperatures between 90K and 20K
Characteristics of the parts will be measured at
room and cryogenic temperatures. Parts and
assemblies will be subjected to temperature
cycling evaluation. Recommendations for a
standardized procedure for qualification of parts
will be suggested. Part performance for extended
durations at cryogenic temperatures will be
evaluated.
Several types of simple microcircuits and passive
components (i.e. resistors ,ceramic and tantalum
capacitors ) representing components typically
used for space flight projects will be acquired,
characterized initially, and subjected to
extended operation at cryogenic temperatures
.Temperature cycling from -65 to 155 oC, between
-197 and 20 oC, and between -265 and 20 oC for
at least 1000 cycles or till destruction may also
be conducted. Analysis of test results will be
performed to estimate accelerating factors,
choose optimal conditions for quality assurance,
and to evaluate their performance for long term
use at cryogenic temperatures.
Deliverables
Schedule/Costs
Total Full-Cost ----
The deliverable is a report (white paper)
containing description of the experiment, test
results, evaluation of performance, reliability,
and analysis of any failures. Recommendations for
qualification testing of the parts intended for
cryogenic operation will be made if supported by
the test results.
NASA and Non-NASA Organizations/Procurements
Parts and testing supplies will be purchased from
various standard suppliers. Selection of parts
will be coordinated with with NASA Glenn
Research Center and JPL. Some support services
will be provided by the GSFC Parts Analysis
Laboratory.
