Title: 20032004 Seasonal Temperature Evolution of Lake Linn

1
2003-2004 Seasonal Temperature Evolution of Lake
Linné
  • Melanie Schimek

2
Goal
  • The goal of my project is to understand the
temperature changes occuring in Lake Linné during
    the past year.
  • Importance temperature influences the sediment
    distribution throughout the lake.

Procedure
  • Four moorings with temperature loggers deployed
in July 2003 were collected from the lake and
    downloaded.
  • Collected TROLL data near mooring sites
  • TROLL measures depth, temperature, barometric
pressure, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and
    conductivity.
  • Concentrating on temperature and turbidity
    measurements to determine possible stratification
    in the lake

Types of Flow
7
Analysis
  • Compare TROLL data to mooring data
  • Analyze weather station data in comparison to
    temperature events in the lake
  • Look for changes (especially seasonal)
  • overturning of the lake

Interpretation
  • How do I explain the changes in the lake?
  • Use weather data
  • Inflow stream temperature data
  • TROLL profile data
  • Possible springs from Kongress causing warmer
    deep water during the winter?

10
Time Line
  • I propose a two semester long Senior Thesis
project that will be completed by March 2005 and
ready to present at the GSA Conference.
  • Fall semester I plan to analyze data and make
    preliminary notes on my findings.
  • Spring semester I will gather my notes and
    complete my Senior Thesis paper.
