  • OCTC, located in Owensboro, is Kentuckys third
    largest city (pop.54,000)
  • OCTC serves a seven-county area in Western
Kentucky and two counties in Southern Indiana.
  • OCTCS Discover College collaborative is a dual
credit program between the college and nine area
high schools that allows students  to earn
college credit while still in high school.
  • OCTC Fall student enrollment numbers reached over
    5,500
  • OCTC implements a NSF grant funded Mechatronics
    certificate program in fall 2007

  • Purpose of Grant
  • To provide a larger pool of highly-skilled,
highly-trained employees to meet occupational and
skill-level demands of the manufacturing industry
  • Targets High School students for training and
increased awareness in the exciting field of
    advanced manufacturing
  • Increase the relevance of OCTCs technician
education programs to reflect modern practices
    involved in advanced manufacturing, specifically
    Mechatronics

  • The Siemens Level I Mechatronic Systems Assistant
  • (Level I Machine Operator) training was
identified as the focus of training
  • OCTC currently has 4 Siemens Certified Level I
    Instructors
  • Grant activities were developed with input from
    the Greater Owensboro Economic Development
    Corporation and partnering industries, including
    Unilever, Sun Windows, Weyerhaeuser, Kimberly
    Clark, and Barton Brands.

  • The Siemens System Approach focuses on the
complexities of a manufacturing system in a
    holistic fashion.
  • Students from the first day of training are
confronted with a complete complex system
  • Students learn parts of the system by examining
their roles and keep the big picture in view.
  • Level I training programs must have a Training
System on site (Equipment that demonstrates
    manufacturing processes)

  • He or she will be able to
  • Localize malfunctions, identify causes and
    sources of malfunctions, correct malfunctions
where possible and/or document malfunctions to be
passed on to the appropriate experts for
resolution, or (where appropriate) exchanging or
    replacing defective components
  • Recognize potential or impending malfunctions and
contact expert assistance in order to keep the
production line functioning and to prevent
    production loss,
  • Perform routine, preventive maintenance
  • Understand and explain the principal operations
of the mechatronic subsystems in a complex
    system,
  • Understand and explain how these subsystems work
    together,
  • Read and understand the technical documents,
reports and outlines specific to the system and
subsystems, and be able to consult with experts
  • Work effectively as a team-member and to
coordinate their activities with upstream and
    downstream operations, and
  • Understand and implement safety regulations
required for operation of the system.
