BCNET
  • BCNET is a non-profit society supporting and
    promoting advanced networks in the province and
    serves BCs universities and research and
    development institutions
  • BCNET is supported by the provincial and federal
    governments as well as by its regional university
    members
  • The mission statements of the universities drives
    the purposes of BCNET
  • Research
  • Teaching
  • Community Service

BCNET - Collaboration
  • Collaboration and community involvement has been
    key to the success of BCNET
  • Advisory Committees are in place to increase the
    communities of interest
  • Network Planning, Applications, and Network
    Research
  • Membership from BCNET members, industry, research
    organizations, and technology leaders
  • Example Working Groups and projects are Identity
    Management, VOIP, Network Performance
    Measurement, BCNET 2010 and the ROADM Project
  • Operations is another key area of collaboration

Operational Collaboration
  • The Network Engineering group is comprised of the
    peer IT Networking groups of each of the primary
    Members of BCNETBCIT, SFU, TRU, UBC, UVIC, and
    UNBC
  • Each Transit Exchange (TX) has the local
    university IT group as its primary support
  • The BCNET 2010 Project expanded the Transit
    Exchange locations to add Kamloops and Kelowna to
    the Prince George, Vancouver, and Victoria sites
  • A central NOC is utilized for 24x7 support and to
    co-ordinate maintenance, scheduling, and trouble
    ticketing
  • Shared trouble ticketing, network monitoring, and
    troubleshooting tools with regular group meetings
    held via video conference

Western ROADM Project
  • BCNET issued an RFI in December 2005 to
    investigate transitioning to an optical network
    infrastructure.
  • Discussions with CANARIE led to the establishment
    of the Western ROADM Project
  • To provision an advanced optical infrastructure
    from Calgary to Seattle via Kelowna, Kamloops,
    Vancouver, and Victoria all BCNET TX sites
  • An MoU was drafted in June 2006 between the three
    parties CANARIE, Netera, and BCNET
  • Collaborating on network design, implementation,
    deployment, operation, and management
