Title: THE DARFUR GENOCIDE

1
THE DARFUR GENOCIDE
  • WHAT IS IT AND WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP

2
HISTORY OF THE CONFLICT
  • The Darfur Genocide began in early 2003, when
Darfurian rebels attacked a government army base.
The government used the Janjaweed militias to
stop the Darfur rebellion, creating a disaster
    for the months to come.
  • It all started with competition over land and
water between Arabic nomadic communities and
    African agrarian tribes. Political parties
representing Darfur wanted participation from the
government in the peace talks. When the
government refused, the Darfurians decided to
take up arms and form organizations like the SLA
    (The Sudan Liberation Army).

CONDITIONS
  • Displaced families have little access to food,
    water, clothing, and shelter.
  • The Janjaweed kill entire families,
systematically rape and mutilate women and girls,
burn down villages, destroy food crops, poison
    wells, and bomb civilian communities.
  • Many victims take refuge on Sudans
    vast border.

THE JANJAWEED
  • The Janjaweed are the Arab militia groups that
are committing the genocide in Sudan's Western
region, Darfur. They are believed to be supported
    by the Sudanese government.
  • The Janjaweed mostly come from the region's
nomadic herding groups and target the civilian
populations living in permanent farm settlements.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
  • Organize a Protest
  • Raise Money for Humanitarian Relief
  • Write to Local Newspapers
  • Contact Local Media
  • Communicate Awareness in any way possible

7
THESIS
  • The conflict in Darfur is one that has gotten
out of control. In the past three years more
than 400,000 people have died and millions have
been displaced from their homes. The Janjaweed
needs to be stopped from committing this
genocide. Action will only be taken if you do
something about it by communicating awareness
about this major issue in any way possible.
