Choking Signs and Symptoms
  • Universal sign of choking
  • Victim is unable to speak,
  • cough or make any noise
  • If they can speak encourage them to cough

Choking Treatment
  • Ask/Say-
  • Are you choking?
  • Can you speak?
  • Im going to help
  • Perform abdominal thrusts until the piece comes
    out

Heart Attack Signs and Symptoms
  • Uncomfortable feeling of pain and pressure in the
    chest, upper arms, back, jaw, neck and stomach
  • Nausea
  • Feeling of weakness
  • Feeling lightheaded

Heart Attack Treatment
  • Call 911
  • Victim needs to sit quietly
  • Get the AED and First Aid kit
  • Prepare to do CPR
  • If victim has medication for heart attacks they
    need to take it

Stroke Signs and Symptoms
  • Sudden facial droop
  • Weakness on one side of the body
  • Trouble speaking or slurred speech

Stroke Treatment
  • Call 911
  • Make the area safe
  • Comfort the victim
  • Prepare to do CPR

Approaching the victim
  • Make sure the scene is safe
  • Shake the victims shoulder
  • Ask Are you okay?
  • No response Call 911

Primary Assessment
  • Head tilt, chin lift
  • Look, listen and feel for breathing
  • If no breathing-
  • Give 2 rescue breaths
  • If the breaths dont go in try again (could
    it be an obstruction?)
  • Check pulse 5-10 seconds

Rescue Breathing
  • Used when the victim isnt breathing but has a
    pulse
  • 1 breath every 5 seconds
  • Breath just enough air to make the chest rise
  • Check breathing and pulse again after 1 minute or
    12 cycles/breaths
  • No pulse start CPR
  • Pulse but no breathingcontinue rescue breathing

  • Sight- on the breastbone above the zyphoid
    process
  • Hands- fingers interlocked 1 hand on top of the
    other
  • Arms- straight, lean over the victim
  • Compress 1/3 to ½ way down the chest
