Title: A JHT FUNDED PROJECT

1
  • A JHT FUNDED PROJECT
  • GFDL PERFORMANCE AND TRANSITION TO HWRF
  • Morris Bender, Timothy Marchok (GFDL)
  • Isaac Ginis, Biju Thomas (URI)

2
IMPROVED NWS MODEL GUIDANCE OVER THE PAST DECADE
HAS RESULTED IN STEADY REDUCTION IN TRACK ERROR
3
SINCE MAJOR PHYSICS UPGRADES IN 2003 THE GFDL
MODEL HAS PROVIDED THE MOST RELIABLE TRACK
GUIDANCE IN BOTH BASINS
4
SUMMARY OF 2006 GFDL MODEL UPGRADES
  • Upgrade with NCEPS Ferrier Micro-physics
  • Dissipative Heating Effect Added
  • Improved Surface Momentum Fluxes
  • Improved Ocean Initialization in the Gulf of
Mexico (e.g., loop current, warm core rings)

5
2006 PHYSICS UPGRADES LEAD TO SIGNFICANTLY
REDUCED INTENSITY ERRORS
6
Acceleration of Overall Trend Over the Past Six
Years of Reduced GFDL Intensity Errors
7
  • COMPARISON BETWEEN GFDL AND PRELIMINARY
    VERSION OF HURRICANE WRF
  • CASES SELECTED FROM 2004, 2005, AND 2006
    ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASONS.

Large Storm to Storm Variability in Track
Performance
9
HWRF Tracks of Hurricanes Wilma and Ernesto
Significantly Improved, Other 2004 and 2005 Storm
Tracks Degraded at 120 Hours
10
  • EVALUATION OF UPGRADED HYBRID GFS MODEL

11
Major Upgrades to NCEPs Global Forecast System
(GFS) Scheduled for 2007
  • Replacement of Spectral Interpolation (SSI)
    Analysis System with Gridpoint Statistical
    Interpolation (GSI)
  • Replacement of Sigma Vertical Coordinate System
    with Hybrid Sigma-Pressure System
  • Use of Increased Observations
  • Updated GFS Radiation Module
  • NEW MODELING SYSTEM EXTENSIVELY TESTED
  • ON 2005 2006 ATLANTIC AND EASTERN PACIFIC
  • HURRICANE SEASONS.
  • COMPARISONS MADE FOR BOTH GFDL AND GFS

SUMMARY
  • NEW PHYSICS UPGRADES TO GFDL MODEL IN 2006 LEAD
    TO MUCH IMPROVED INTENSITY FORECASTS.
  • LATEST GFDL PHYSICS PACKAGES WERE SUCCESSFULLY
    TRANSFERRED TO HWRF.
  • HWRF TRACK ERROR COMPARABLE TO GFDL AT 72H WITH
SOME DEGRADATION IN LONGER TERM BUT HWRF MODEL
    DEVELOPMENT CONTINUING.
  • NEW VERSION OF GFS HYBRID COORDINATE SYSTEM AND
GSI IS LEADING TO IMPROVED TRACKS FOR BOTH THE
GFS AND GFDL MODELS IN 3-5 DAYS IN THE ATLANTIC.

  • GFDL AND GFS TRACK COMPARISONS FOR
ALL OF THESE CASES ARE AVAILABLE AT
  • ftp//ftp.gfdl.noaa.gov/pub/mb/hybrid/
