Learning to be a Motivator
  • By Vanessa Ayola-Betancourt

  • Weingberg Chapter 13

2
Agenda
  • Introduction
  • Definition of rules
  • Survival rules
  • Meta-rules
  • Leadership and rules
  • Transforming rules into guides
  • Conclusion

3
Survival Rules
  • Everyone has some rules for dealing with other
    people
  • Example
  • What sort of suit to wear if you are a banker
  • The Proper way to interact with others
  • We tend to think of them as universal truths

4
Introduction
  • In chapter 13, Weingber introduces concepts,
techniques, and guidelines about learning to
motivate people from a leadership standpoint.
  • How leaders should manage rules, and how they
    can transform rules in guidelines

5
What is a Rule?
  • Standardization, a formal and widely-accepted
    statement, fact, definition, or qualification
  • Norm (philosophy), a kind of sentence or a reason
    to act, feel or believe
  • Source Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

6
Meta-Rules
  • Rules about rules
  • Meta-rules control the flow of ideas about rules,
and thus determine how readily we can learn new
    rules, or unlearn old ones.
  • Meta-rules determine how easily we can change the
    way we interact with others

7
Leadership and Rules
  • A Problem-Solving leader is concerned with rules,
because they have a strong influence on the flow
    of ideas
  • Understanding about rules will help leaders to
figure out how to reach other people, and
    therefore, motivate them.

8
Transforming Rules into Guides
  • To be an effective leader, create a guide rather
    than a rule
  • Step-by-step process
  • Step 1 State the rule clearly and explicitly
  • I must always help everyone

9
  • Step 2 Acknowledge the rules survival value and
strike a bargain with your unconscious mind
  • Old rules can stay the same, they also can be
modified to your convenience. However, you can
always go back to the old rule
  • Example
  • Driving a car in London

10
  • Step 3 Give yourself a choice
  • The old rule was your own choice. You can choose
whether to use it or not
  • Old rule
  • I must always help everyone
  • Transform old rule to
  • I can always help everybody (If I choose to).

11
  • Step 4 Change from certainty to possibility
  • Perfection rule (old)
  • I must always be perfectly effective.
  • Transform to
  • I can always help everybody (if I choose to)
  • Step 5 Change the rule from totality to
    non-totality
  • Get rid of Universal statements
  • I can sometimes help some others (if I choose
    to).

12
  • Step 6 Change from general to particular
  • Decide which people and when
  • be aware that you have choices
  • Give at least three examples as in
  • I can help other people when
  • They ask me clearly for help
  • I have the skills to help them
  • I have the resources to help them
  • it fits to help them
  • I choose to help them
  • I will be able to tolerate failure to help

13
Conclusion
  • There are two types of rules survival rules and
    meta-rules
  • Survival rules and meta-rules play a vital role
    in the motivation process
  • Survival rules and meta-rules can change with
time but also by applying the step-by-step
    transformation
  • The transformation process help leaders to
understand how to be effective with other people
