• London was an important trading and
  administrative centre as early as Roman times.
• It was founded by the Celts and its name was
  Llyn-din, meaning a marshy fortified place, which
  the Romans named Londinium.

• Since the time of Edward the Confessor , 1042,
  London has been the capital of Britain.
• In 1666 the city was struck by two great
  tragedies, the Gread plaugue and the Gread fire.

• Many buildings were also destroyed in the Second
  World War.
