Title: Standardization, where are we going and why are we going there

1
Standardization, where are we going and why are
we going there? Peter Eilsø Nielsen, June 17th,
2008
2
QUESTION
  • A lot off effort has been put into
standardization. Has it been worth the effort?
Are we harvesting the full value for the
energy industry? Is it worth continuing
    developing more standards?

3
ANOTHER QUESTION
  • Where should standardization go next?
  • Maintenance?
  • Further development within Production?
  • Static modeling (Rescue format exist)
  • Dynamic modeling?
  • Exploration?

4
YET ANOTHER QUESTION
  • Who should drive standardization?
  • Organizations like Energistics?
  • Energy companies?
  • Service / Vendor companies?
  • IT companies?

5
STATEMENT ONE
  • Standardization is easy to do on paper, but
hard to do in reality (in a company)

6
STATEMENT TWO
  • Standardization is a waste of time, we have
tried it and it does not work

7
STATEMENT THREE
  • We have made an open standard that all others
    should adapt and use

8
STATEMENT THREE
  • We have made an open standard and a TOOLKIT
that all others should adapt and use

9
STATEMENT FOUR
  • Standardization is done by our IT department (or
    ICT department)

10
STATEMENT FOUR
  • Standardization is done by the users, the
relevant vendors, and our IT department

11
STATEMENT FIVE
  • We wait to implement the standard until it is
finished and implement the final version

12
STATEMENT FIVE
  • Standardization never ends

13
STATEMENT FIVE
  • Standardization never ends, but it will
    consolidate

14
NECESSITY ONE
  • Standards have to focus on consolidation and be
backwards compatible as far as possible

15
NECESSITY TWO
  • Standards should as default, incorporate context
    information

16
NECESSITY THREE
  • Standards should always be developed with a
clear purpose and a defined business case

17
FINAL STATEMENT
  • A standard is a success when it is widely used
by people that has NOT BEEN INVOLVED in the
definition and the development of the standard
as if its always been there.
