Sexual Aggression Myths
  • Myth "She asked for it." Women often provoke
rape by their own behavior (wearing certain
clothing, going out alone or late, drinking)
Fact The offender, not the survivor, must be
    held responsible.
  • Myth Women frequently "cry rape." Fact Women
don't lie about rape, only 2 of reported sexual
    assaults are false (FBI)
  • Myth Only women can be raped. Fact 1 in 10 men
are victims of adult sexual assault (FBI).
Between 1 in 6 male children are sexually abused.
  • Myth Most sexual assaults are committed by
strangers, at night, in out-of-the-way places.
Fact Familiar people safe places are more
dangerous. 80 of sexual assaults are committed
by someone the survivor knows (FBI). Over 50
occur at home as many during the daytime as at
    night.
  • Myth "It can't happen to me." Fact Anyone can
    be sexually assaulted.
