Title: Preparing Future Faculty Fellowship Program
1Preparing Future Faculty Fellowship Program
- What makes an application competitive?
2The most competitive applicants in past
competitions shared 4 characteristics
3- Demonstrated that they have a realistic knowledge
of the program - Clearly met the selection criteria
- Taken time to be accurate in filling out the
application - Had strong support (in writing) from the faculty
in their disciplines and/or program
4Todays plan is to address each of these points
so that you will be well prepared to fill out
your applications for the Fellowship
5First, do you have a realistic knowledge of the
PFF Fellowship program?
6- The fellowships are intended to prepare doctoral
program graduates for academic careers in higher
education - They provide monetary support for three years
- They provide exposure to a variety of types of
institutions of higher education - PFF Fellows work with a PFF Faculty Mentor
throughout their tenure in the program
7Next, do you know the Eligibility and Selection
criteria? There are 5 components
8- Applicants must
- Be a doctoral student at UMKC who will not have
reached candidacy prior to becoming a PFF Fellow - Desire to pursue an academic career in higher
education - Have an undergraduate or prior graduate grade
point average of at least 3.5 on a 4-point scale -
9- Agree to participate in a Teaching Excellence
Program throughout their fellowship tenure. - Be recommended by the faculty in their degree
program. This faculty recommendation needs to
address the applicants potential for an academic
career and name the faculty member who will be
mentoring the student should he or she receive a
PFF Fellowship.
10Third, you REALLY need to be accurate when
filling out the application form. For example
11- Information should be complete and address the
specific questions on the application - Type the information on the form
- Proof read your form Have someone else check
your form before you turn it in
12Include ALL required attachments to the
application form
- Transcripts
- Faculty recommendations
- Narrative statement / educational philosophy
13Faculty Recommendations
- When you ask a faculty member to write a
recommendation for this fellowship, be sure they
understand they need to address your potential
for an academic career. - Determine whether the faculty member feels he/she
can give a positive recommendation.
14Your Narrative Statement should address
- Your educational philosophy
- Your teaching and research objectives
- Your career goals
15Remember that the deadline to submit your
application for this (or any of the Fellowships
awarded through the School of Graduate Studies)
