  • A harm minimisation approach does not condone or
    condemn drug use but aims to prevent and reduce
    the risks associated with drug use and to promote
    healthy behaviours and lifestyles

HOW MUCH DRUG ED SHOULD WE DO?
  • Primary Schools should ensure that students
    receive at least 10 hours of comprehensive DRUG
    EDUCATION during the school year.
  • (Auditor Generals Report on Drug Education in
    Government Schools, 2003)

WHAT IS A DRUG ?
  • Any substance, with the exception of food and
    water, which, when taken into the body, alters
    its function physically and/or psychologically
    (World Health organisation)

HOW DRUGS AFFECT PEOPLE
  • How the drug is taken
  • Physical characteristics of the user
  • The mood and environment of the user
  • Tolerance
  • Polydrug Use
  • Drugs Pregnancy

Classifying drugs by their effectson the CNS
  • DEPRESSANTS
  • Depressants slow down the way the body
    works. This is because depressant drugs slow down
    messages that pass to and from via the central
    nervous system.
  • STIMULANTS
  • Stimulants, like depressants, effect the
    messages passing to and from the brain.
    Stimulants however stimulate or speed up
    messages. People who use stimulants initially
    feel more awake and alert.
  • HALLUCINOGENS
  • Hallucinogens change the way the brain works.
    They change perceptions of reality. People who
    take hallucinogens can never be sure of the
    effects they will feel.

DEPRESSANTS
  • Effects of small amounts can include
  • Feeling happy, relaxed, and less anxious
  • Feeling less pain
  • Having slower reflexes, heart rate, and breathing
  • Drowsiness
  • Smaller pupils
  • Poor co-ordination
  • Poor concentration
  • Poor judgement
  • Less inhibition
  • Effects of larger amounts can include
  • Feelings of pleasure
  • Slurred speech
  • Sluggish or un-coordinated movements ALCOHOL,
    PAIN KILLERS,
  • Nausea and vomiting HEROIN, CANNABIS,
  • Slowed breathing and heart rate METHODONE,
  • Delusions and hallucinations TRANQUILLISERS,
  • CHROMING

STIMULANTS
  • Effects of small amounts can include
  • Feeling more awake and alert
  • Feeling more energetic and confident
  • Increased heart rate and body temperature
  • Loss of appetite
  • Large pupils
  • Talkativeness
  • Sleeping difficulties
  • Effects of larger amounts can include
  • Headaches
  • Stomach cramps
  • Fits
  • Anxiety
  • Panic
  • Paranoia
  • Delusions and hallucinations

HALLUCINOGENS
  • After taking hallucinogens
  • People may hear, see, taste, and smell things
    differently
  • They may have a distorted view of reality
  • People may experience trips.. enjoyable Vs

  • Shaking
  • People may experience flashbacks later
