Goodes Hall Expansion projectsGoodes Hall Café
and LEED Certification
  • Gate 1 Presentation
  • January 28, 2007
  • Prepared by
  • Elizabeth Kowpak, Director

Executive Summary
  • Goodes Hall Café
  • (continuation of Mike Wallaces initiative)
  • Issue Café in Goodes is currently run by
Sodexho. As ComSoc represents Commerce, it is
logical to have a student-run coffee shop in
Goodes. It will encourage students to learn how
to run their own business and provide a
cafeteria-like common area to socialize with
    peers and professors.
  • Timeline January - May
  • Characterization Slightly broad, Long-term
  • Plan
  • Speak with members of the AMS and Tea Room
managers to discuss the creation of a viable food
    services provider
  • Speak with QSB administrator to develop a method
of integrating the café into academic and
    extracurricular life
  • Speak with Sodexho officials regarding the plan
    and its feasibility
  • Deliverable Action plan which outlines necessary
steps and includes a preliminary business plan
  • Contact Liz Kowpak (4emk_at_qlink.queensu.ca)
  • LEED certification
  • Issue Queens Centre has the objective to obtain
Silver rating in the LEED certification program.
All new buildings on campus should aim to achieve
at least that, if not Gold or Platinum rating.
ComSoc should push for the design to aim for a
Gold rating in the new Goodes expansion. This
will provide recognition for leadership in modern
design, and provide unquantifiable benefits for
the staff and students in Commerce.
  • Timeline January - May
  • Characterization Broad, Long-term
  • Plan
  • Identify the design qualities of the Goodes
    expansion, Queens Centre, and ILC
  • Determine financial costs and benefits of
upgrading, and additional steps needed to be
takenCreate a rough proposal to induce change
  • Deliverable Action plan outlining all steps and
    an outline for a proposal

IDEA
  • Goodes Hall Café
  • (as previously outlined by Mike Wallace)
  • By running the Goodes Hall Café, ComSoc would
have a steady flow of revenue, benefiting student
life, while offering a unique opportunity for
members to develop real world business skills and
    experience.
  • It is necessary to evaluate the feasibility of
this project, including its effect on all
    involved.
  • Major issues to deal with include
  • Integration into academic and extracurricular
    life
  • Financial feasibility of operating the café
  • Easiness of having Sodexho leave the operation
  • LEED certification
  • Having a Platinum LEED certification on the
Goodes expansion is consistent with the Commerce
    emphasis on developing leaders
  • It will draw media attention to Commerce and
    Queens, positively affecting school reputation
    and recruitment opportunities
  • The building will create a positive learning and
teaching environment for all stakeholders as well
as huge financial and qualitative benefits. (See
    study http//www.cape.com/ewebeditpro/items/O59F9
    819.pdf)
  • Major issues to deal with
  • Cost to build, access to funds
  • Design already drawn up for expansion, may be
    hard to initiate change

4

Outcome
  • Goodes Hall Café
  • Through the creation of an action plan, a
dedicated team will work towards establishing a
ComSoc run café in Goodes Hall, which will
  • Provide ComSoc with steady revenue
  • Provide students with a great extracurricular
experience where they can make money while
    gaining valuable skills
  • Provide students, faculty, and staff a friendly
common place to socialize and relax
  • LEED certification
  • With an approved proposal to improve the design
of the Goodes Hall expansion to meet the Platinum
    LEED standards, this project will
  • Hugely improve the learning, teaching, and
working environment for all stakeholders in the
    building
  • Be consistent with QSBs and Queens reputation
as a leader in todays Educational institutions
  • Recognized internationally (like UBC, see link
    http//www.publicaffairs.ubc.ca/media/releases/200
    6/mr-06-004.html)
  • Decrease operating costs substantially
