Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)
  • A world-class physics research facility
  • 1000 scientists from the U.S. and 22 other
    nations
  • Explores the properties of matter at the
beginning of the universe and the structure of
    fundamental particles
  • Facility includes
  • Tandem, AGS, RHIC tunnel and ring, and three
    operational detectors

6
National Synchrotron Light Source
  • Provides intense beams of light in the x-ray,
    ultraviolet, and infrared wavelengths
  • Used for basic and applied research in physics,
    chemistry, medicine, and environmental and
    materials sciences
  • 2400 researchers annually from more than 400
    universities, laboratories and companies

7
NASA Space Radiation Laboratory
  • NASA/BNL facility that explores risks to humans
exposed to space radiation during space travel
  • Uses accelerator beams to simulate cosmic rays in
    space
  • Goal is to develop methods and materials that
reduce the risk to human beings on prolonged
    space missions

8
Center for Functional Nanomaterials
  • Inter-disciplinary exploration of materials that
use energy more efficiently, and practical
    alternatives to fossil fuels
  • Ribbon cutting 5/07 operational 4/08
  • Nano-safety at the Lab
  • Complies with DOE Policy by continuing to
proactively and develop and apply best guideline
    procedures
  • Nanoscience Research Centers ESH Working Group
adopted BNL Working with Nanomaterials SBMS
    procedures
  • CFN ESH rep selected to lead this group
  • Lab Institutional Nanoscience Safety Advisory
Committee (INSAC) formed upon recommendation of
Labs Policy Council to evaluate and address
    nano-related issues

9
Center for Translational Neuroimaging
  • Complementary brain imaging tools to improve the
    understanding of human brain
  • PET and MRI scanners
  • MicroPET and microMRI scanners
  • Optical imaging laboratory
  • Microdialysis laboratory
  • Clinical Research Center
  • Areas of study drug addiction, obesity and
    compulsive overeating, ADHD, depression,
    aggression

10
Brookhaven Science Associates
  • BNL is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science
Associates (BSA) for DOEs Office of Science
  • Corporate partners are the Research Foundation of
the State University of New York and Battelle
    Memorial Institute
  • Core universities are Columbia, Cornell, Harvard,
    MIT, Princeton Yale
  • BSA is governed by a Board of Directors, which is
    responsible for
  • Conducting oversight of Laboratory performance,
    using committees such as
  • Science and Technology Steering Committee
  • Four Risk Committees (Audit, Finance,
    Institutional Strategy, and Personnel
    Compensation)
  • Developing performance and risk reporting
    strategy and measures
  • Board meets tri-annually
  • Laboratory Director serves as the President of
    BSA
