• Tandem, AGS, RHIC tunnel and ring, and three
  operational detectors

National Synchrotron Light Source

• Provides intense beams of light in the x-ray,
  ultraviolet, and infrared wavelengths
• Used for basic and applied research in physics,
  chemistry, medicine, and environmental and
  materials sciences
• 2400 researchers annually from more than 400
  universities, laboratories and companies

NASA Space Radiation Laboratory

• NASA/BNL facility that explores risks to humans
  exposed to space radiation during space travel
• Uses accelerator beams to simulate cosmic rays in
  space
• Goal is to develop methods and materials that
  reduce the risk to human beings on prolonged
  space missions

Center for Functional Nanomaterials

• Inter-disciplinary exploration of materials that
  use energy more efficiently, and practical
  alternatives to fossil fuels

• Nano-safety at the Lab
• Complies with DOE Policy by continuing to
  proactively and develop and apply best guideline
  procedures
• Nanoscience Research Centers ESH Working Group
  adopted BNL Working with Nanomaterials SBMS

• Lab Institutional Nanoscience Safety Advisory
  Committee (INSAC) formed upon recommendation of

• Coordinates activities among operational areas

• Meets monthly

• Provides a forum for senior leadership to share
  information with the management team and to
  solicit feedback on various issues and
  initiatives
• Includes Policy Council members and all other
  managers on the BNL Org Chart
• Brings science and operations managers together
• Convened by the Director
