What is a Resume?
  • Pure and simple a marketing tool!
  • Advertisement to the employment community that
    you are the solution to their problem
  • It is NOT
  • Your life history
  • False or misleading

  • Your resume will get 10 to 12 seconds of
    attention, how will it stand out?

Before starting
  • Inventory your skills
  • List your experiences in detail
  • Be knowledgeable of the professional field and
    job descriptions
  • Brainstorm and answer this question

Resumes 101
  • Keep it clean, simple and easily legible
  • Clean white paper
  • No more than two pages
  • Margins should be between .5 and 1
  • Font no smaller than 10
  • No Word Templates
  • Use no more than two graphic elements
    underlines, bullets, bolds, etc

  • All items are listed in reverse chronological
    order
  • Traditional format
  • Most common type
  • Use if you
  • Have a solid work history

  • Education is listed in reverse chronological
    order
  • Experience is omitted in favor of focusing on the
    skills you have in functional areas
  • Use if you
  • Want to change careers
  • Work in a non-traditional field
  • USE WITH CAUTION!

  • Education is listed in reverse chronological
    order
  • Functional skills are primary focus
  • Experience is listed in reverse chronological
    order with no duties
