Title: The Living Earth

1
The Living Earth
  • HS Biology

2
Biosphere
  • What makes the earth different than other
    planets?
  • One difference is the earths abundance of living
    things.
  • The part of the earth that supports life is
    called the biosphere.

3
Made of the top portion of Earths crust, all the
water on earths surface, and the surrounding
atmosphere.

5
Biosphere
  • Made up of different environments that are home
    to different kinds of organisms
  • Deserts little rain- cactus, coyotes and lizards
  • Arctic regions cold- polar bears, seals, and
    walrus
  • All living organisms that inhabit an environment
    are called BIOTIC factors

6
Ecosystem
  • All the organisms living in an area and the
    nonliving features of their environment
  • Abiotic factors are the nonliving parts of the
    environment.
  • Examples are air currents, temperature, moisture,
    light and soil.

8
ECOLOGY
  • The study of the interactions that occur among
    organisms and their environment
  • Ecological study reveals interrelationships
between biotic and abiotic parts of the world

9
Ecology
10
What are some biotic and abiotic factors in this
ecosystem?

Organizing Organisms
  • Ecologists study interactions among organisms at
    several different levels
  • They study individual organisms, interactions
between organisms of the same species, and
    interactions between organisms of different
    species

13
POPULATION
  • A population is made up of all the organisms in
an ecosystem that belong to the same species
  • Members of the same population compete with one
another for food, water, mates, and other
    resources.
  • The ways in which organisms in a population share
the resources of their environment determine how
far apart populations are and how large each
    population can become.

14
Gannet population
15
Community
  • All the populations in an ecosystem.
  • The prairie community is made of populations of
bison, grasshoppers, cowbirds, and all other
    species in the ecosystem.

16
Habitat
The place in which an organism lives
There are many habitats within an ecosys-tem
17
Habitat
  • Must provide the kinds of food, shelter,
temperature, and moisture the organism needs to
    survive
  • For example, trees are the woodpeckers habitat

18
Niche
  • A niche is the role a species plays in a
    community
  • The space, food, and other conditions an organism
needs to survive and reproduce are part of its
    niche.
  • A species niche includes more than just feeding
    relationships.
  • It also includes how a species uses and affects
    its environment.
