Comparing discussion and dialogue
  • Dialogue is diverging. It is about exploring the
    nature of choice, seeking a richer grasp of
    complex issue.
  • Discussion is converging. It is about making a
    decision or course of action.
  • Each has own goals and ground rules.

Purpose of dialogue
  • To create an atmosphere in which we can perceive
    what really matters to most of us. Doing so gives
    us access to a much finer and subtler kind of
    intelligence.

  • Ownership of the process and outcomes-we are
    responsible for what is happening.

  • To reveal incoherence in our thought
  • People become observer of their own thinking and
    the collective nature of thought
  • Our thinking is producing consequences
  • that we dont really want
  • It has to do with building a safe container or
    space for a group to operate. Fear and judgment
    must give way
