  • Step 4 How am I going to know if I have done it?

5
WHAT DO I NEED TO LEARN ?(REFLECTION)
  • What areas (organisational and clinical) make you
    anxious?
  • What keeps cropping up in discussions on clinical
or other matters that seems to be going wrong?
  • What clinical conditions make you feel you can
    not cope?
  • What are you good at (and might enjoy learning
    more about)?
  • What conditions do you wish would present to your
    partners rather than yourself?
  • Have any hospital letters suggested you could
    have done better?

6
HOW DO I KNOW?
  • Significant (or critical) event analysis.
  • Keeping a clinical diary.
  • Logbook "PUNS" ("Patients' Unmet Needs") and DENS
    ("Doctor's Educational Needs").
  • Audit data.
  • Consultants' comments.
  • Partners' confidential appraisal.
  • Staff views/observations.
  • It may be helpful to find a mentor with whom to
    discuss your checklist.

7
DEVELOPING A PLAN
  •  It may be helpful to find a mentor with whom to
    discuss your checklist.
  • Negotiation between learner and a
    tutor/facilitator
  • Discussion in small groups between peers
  • Alone i.e. a formalisation of the thinking that
practitioners already do when planning their CME
  • AVOID TEMPTATION TO FOCUS ON AREAS OF EXPERTISE
    RATHER THAN AREAS OF DEFICIENCY.

8
PLANNING GOALS
  • An outline of how you plan to address your
    learning needs.
  • Try to make these "SMART"  Specific Measurable
    Achievable Relevant Timed.
