ECDL HellasDigital literacy for all
  • ECDL certificates are recognised internationally
and in Greece are the prerequisites for being
    employed at the public sector.
  • People facing vision insufficiency or total lack
of, have equal rights to benefit from technology
and to use it to best effect, both in their
personal day-to-day life as well as for their
    work.
  • ECDL Hellas, acknowledging the importance of
digital literacy for all and committed towards
providing access to the Information Society for
the blind and visually impaired citizens, has
incorporated the ECDL for the Blind axis to its
    overall Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy
    (CSR) Programme.

5
ECDL Hellas and equal rights
  • Through a continuous investment in qualified
    personnel and specialised infrastructure, ECDL
Hellas, since 2006, has cooperated with the
biggest NGOs of the country Lighthouse of the
Blinds of Greece, Helios School for the Blind
    of Northern Greece, The Pan-Hellenic
    Association of the Blind.
  • Specially, the cooperation with the Pan-Hellenic
Association of the Blind contributed to the
improvement of the Automated Test Evaluation
System (ECDL inAtes) features, functionality and
tests, to ensure that the visually impaired
candidates could also be tested through this
    system.
  • This resulted in testing and certifying visually
impaired people through the same examination
procedures used for all ECDL candidates.

6
ECDL for the BlindProject Benefits
  • The project is part of the governmental
    Operational Program "Information Society" (IS).
  • The implementation of this programme is
undertaken by Vocational Training S.A., a
subsidiary of the Greek Organization of Manpower
(OAED), which belongs to the public sector.
  • ECDL Hellas is the only organisation that
participates in the certification process of this
    project.
  • With the finalization of this project by 2010,
and as a substantial percentage of blind and
visually impaired participants will be certified
to the ECDL standard, ECDL Hellas believes that a
critical mass of blind people can diffuse ICT
knowledge to other visually impaired individuals.
  • Within the context of emphasis that the European
Union places on socially vulnerable groups and
the people with disabilities (PD) the mission of
the project is to provide equal opportunities to
the blind or visually impaired ensuring their
access to knowledge and offering employment
    opportunities.

7
ECDL for the BlindWhere it is currently offered
  • Blind and visually impaired citizens have the
opportunity to attend training sessions offered
by trainers, to whom ECDL Hellas provided the
appropriate guidance and support to ensure high
quality ECDL training to visually impaired
    people.
  • Certified ECDL Testing Centers all over Greece
are equipped with the appropriate infrastructure
to welcome impaired candidates and offer them a
    highly facilitated testing experience.
  • Though the majority of the candidates so far is
concentrated in big cities, the programme aims to
reach as many candidates as possible, even in
rural areas, thus facilitating their every day
activities, providing them assets that will
enhance their chances of employability, and
introducing them an to important means of
    communication.

8
ECDL for the BlindOur measurable target
  • From 2006 to 2010 ECDL Hellas aims to certify 750
blind or visually impaired citizens in
    entry-level ICT skills.

9
ECDL Hellas for the BlindProject status
  • Since 2006, ECDL Hellas has certified more than
200 blind citizens, among which 4 instructors
(ECDL CTP) offering them one valuable asset that
assists them in verifying their familiarization
with the PC, but also contribute considerably to
    their professional re-establishment.

10
ECDL for the BlindTechnical features
  • Through the development of the Automated Test
Evaluation System inATES 5.0 and the Examination
content used for the four basic ECDL modules,
fully compatible with the most popular screen
reading software used, such as JAWS and
HAL/SuperNova, in a way that facilitates the
testing experience for the blind and visually
impaired, ECDL Hellas has made an investment that
the Pan-Hellenic Association of the Blind has
    dearly welcomed.

ECDL for the BlindKey Benefits
  • Basic e-skills increase the employability of
visually impaired people and increase their
opportunities to enter the job market, matching
    the demands of employers.
  • They obtain an internationally-recognized
certification which is identified with top ICT
    standards that strengthens the professional
    assets of certified people.
  • The acquisition of ICT skills increases visually
    impaired people's communication competences and
social skills this helps them to be more
    self-confident and self-sufficient, and
    facilitates their everyday personal and
    professional life.

16
ECDL for the BlindBenefits (contd)
  • Candidates appreciated the functionality of the
improved testing system and all initial doubts
towards this project were easily eliminated. This
means that the testing experience is more
accessible, more pleasant, whereas the validity
of the certification procedure is indisputable
since it is identical for all candidates.
  • Through this cooperation ECDL Hellas, returns
Skill Cards revenue deriving from this programme
to the Pan-Hellenic Association of the Blind to
further reinforce the significant work of the
    Association.

Undoubtedly I would recommend and encourage my
friends, either in full sight or with visual
disadvantages, especially those intending to
enter the jobs market, to follow my steps.
Today's employers have high standards and
demands, whilst candidates have high expectations
from themselves. This means that in order to
possess the basis for a successful career, you
have to invest in knowledge. Candidate's
