ELEMENTS OF DRAMA

Setting

• The time and place in which the action occurs.
• It could be the past, present, or future, day or
  night, or during a historical period

MOOD

• A feeling, such as excitement, anger, or
  happiness, that the writer creates for the reader
  in a work of literature

THEME

• The message or insight about life or human nature
  that the writer presents to the reader.

FORESHADOWING

• Technique of hinting about an event that will
  occur later on in the story.

PLOT

• Sequence of actions events in a literary work.
  Almost ALL plots center on at least one conflict
  or problem that the characters struggle to
  resolve.

5 STAGES OF PLOT

• EXPOSITION provides background information,
  introduces characters, setting, and conflict.

Rising Action

• The conflict becomes obvious, complications
  arise, and suspense begins to build as they
  struggle to solve the problem.

CLIMAX

• turning point
• The peak of interest and intensity, usually near
  the end of the story when the outcome becomes
  clear.

Falling Action

• Occurs after the climax and shows the elements of
  the climax

RESOLUTION

• Blends with the falling action.
• Explains how the conflict is resolved
