2
Is preparing students for degree programs within
the ACE mandate?
  • According to the CSC Document The 3 Ms of ACE
    Programming Myths, Misinformation and
    Misconceptions (see CSC Website)
  • The focus of ACE is on securing access primarily
for students whose goal is a post secondary
college program. The identified course outcomes
are the minimum which must be learned to qualify
  • There is nothing to stop individual colleges
    from supplementing activities for individual
students to meet the admission requirements of a
    specific university program.

3
Why should Academic Upgrading offer University
Preparation courses?
  • Applied Degree programs offered by a growing
number of colleges require University Preparation
    high school credits as prerequisites
  • Many students who have not completed high school
are capable of working at an advanced academic
    level
  • Foreign educated students may not be able to
produce transcripts to enter degree programs of
    their choice
  • Many students have a goal of earning a degree
before they complete their education, and would
prefer Academic Upgrading to be one of the
    alternative routes.

4
What routes are there now for students wanting to
enter degree programs?
5
How can we adapt ACE curriculum to meet
university preparation outcomes?
  • Review secondary school University Preparation
    curriculum outcomes
  • Review post-secondary program needs
  • Talk to people with high school experience
  • Compare existing ACE curriculum and add and
    enhance units where necessary
  • Where possible, allow student choice to suit
    needs and goals

6
What problems need to be solved to make
ACE-University Prep feasible?
  • Determining criteria for student eligibility
  • Providing teachers time for curriculum
    development and planning
  • Overcoming perception of unfair competition by
    some college programs
  • Negotiating recognition by college and university
    admission departments
