  • LIFE is the European Community financial
    instrument for the
  • environment, for the period 2007 2013.
  • It has three components
  • LIFE Nature Biodiversity,
  • (2) LIFE Environment Policy and Governance,
  • (3) LIFE Information and Communication.

  • Total EU Budget 2.143 billion
  • Total 2009 Budget 20 million and increasing!
  • Run by the Environment DG
  • At least 50 of the budget is reserved for Nature
    and Biodiversity projects
  • Remaining 50 to Env Policy Gov and Info
    Communication projects

Minimum Entry requirements
  • LIFE is open to ALL legal persons resident in
    Member States.
  • Open to public, private and NGO sectors
  • No minimum consortium sizes
  • Partnerships can be trans-national
  • Actions must take place on territory of EU27
  • Typical length is 2-5 years
  • No max or minimum budget sizes, (advisable
    reimbursement 1million)

Important things to note
  • Reimbursement rate 50 (75 for LIFE Nature
    priority species or habitats)
  • Innovative/best practice/demonstration projects
    in the Environment field.
  • Projects that have EU added value - policy
    relevant, Natura 2000 etc.
  • Does not fund research actions
  • Actions proposed in LIFE projects should not be
    eligible for support under other European funds
    Article 9, CIP, FP7, EEF etc
  • Does not fund projects that have been done before

Case Study Demonstration of DeMethyl Ether
Vehicles for Sustainable Transport
Details Volvo Powertrain (coordinator) 907 k
LIFE contribution  Objective To demonstrate the
feasibility of dimethyl ether (DME) technology
for heavy duty vehicles How Build and run 4x
DME prototype lorries. 1x for testing and
development, 3x customised to perform municipal
tasks for the City of Växjö (Sweden). The project
will address the issue of DME storage and
distribution, by building and operating a
demonstration DME fuel station.

environmentally-friendly tyre design that
achieves substantial reductions in
rolling-resistance of up to 30.

Case Study Collecting used cooking oils to
their recycling as biofuel for diesel engines
Details Institute for Energy Diversification and
Saving - Coordinator 2 yr project - 800 k LIFE
contribution  Objective Develop a pilot scheme,
to set-up a collection system for waste vegetable
oils. Process the oil in a pilot plant that
transforms the waste oil into biodiesel fuel,
which is used in Valencias urban bus fleet
. Results 1. Waste oil no longer dumped into
the public drainage system. 800 organisations
involved and around 800,000 litres of used
cooking oil collected.2. The oil was stored and
sent to a transformation plant to produce
bio-diesel, fuel to be used by buses. During the
project 322,654 litres of eco-diesel used. 3.
Plan developed at local level - regulations
created.
