Planning
  • December 2005 Surveyed students and teachers
  • February 2006 Went to school board with survey
results and presentation asking for permission to
come up with a plan for 11 computing
  • March 2006 Presented at school board meeting on
    progress of technology committee.
  • April 2006 Students and staff presented at
school board meeting how they would use
technology if they had access to it.
  • May 2006 Board approved plan. Ordered
    hardware/software.
  • June July 2006 Made images, offered staff
    development. Handed out teacher laptops.
  • August 2006 Hired new technology staff position
and handed out laptops to students during the
    first week of school.

Technology Committee
  • Student
  • Staff
  • Community
  • Teachers
  • Administration
  • Met at least once a month, they listened to
vendor proposals and helped to created the
software list. Gave input on policy.

6
Goals
  • Learning Goal
  • GOAL Infuse 21st Century learning skills into
    current curriculum
  • Technology Goal
  • GOAL Transforming current curriculum into
digital curriculum and 11 learning in Language
Arts, Social Studies, Science and Math.
  • Teachers
  • Teachers need training on how to use technology
to make their teaching easier, more productive
    and more effective.
  • need ease of use
  • Teachers need to know that the data is secure.
    (login password)
  • Teachers need access 24/7
  • Students
  • Students need portability, ease of use, and a
    task to use them for.
  • Students need to be able to save data to a secure
    storage location.
  • Students need security i.e. login, virus
    protection
  • Students need access 24/7

7
Our proposal
  • Provide laptops to 7-12 staff members
  • Provide laptops to Board of Education
  • Provide laptops to 9-12 students
  • Provide a 24 station laptop cart for 7-8 grade
    use.
  • Provide a 24 station laptop cart for grades K-6.
  • Free up one computer lab so that it can be an
    extra classroom

8
Partners
  • ESU 16 Software training
  • ESU 10 Hardware support Wireless
    infrastructure.
  • GovConnections Hardware supplier
  • Lenovo Hardware replacement/repair
  • MyElearning of Nebraska

9
Hardware
  • Laptops
  • All laptops will need 3 year accidental coverage,
which covers them for everything except theft or
    fire.
  • Digital cameras and camcorders will be available
in the library for checkout to staff.
  • Teachers will need docking stations, mouse and
    keyboard.

10
Hardware
  • Durable
  • We purchased extra warranties that provided for
    accidental drops and electrical surges.
  • Parents' coverage
  • Homeowners covers because it is leased and the
    students have it 24/7
  • Parents can purchase a rider called a "Personal
    Article Policy" - no deductible
  • We found that 3 years was more cost effective
because of the price of the warranty for the 4th
    year
  • Don't skimp on RAM or Hard drive space.
  • Purchased extra batteries and chargers
  • Purchased docking stations w/keyboard mouse for
    each teacher

11
Software - Choose software that will emphasize
student learning
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements
  • Microsoft Office 2003 - Word, Excel, PowerPoint
    and Publisher
  • Microsoft Student 2006
  • Sonic - Record Now
  • Vital Source
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer
  • Macromedia's Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Sophos Anti-Virus
  • Windows Media Player
  • Windows Movie Maker
  • Winnebago Spectrum Client
  • Inspiration 8.0
  • South-Western keyboarding software

12
Student Information System
  • PowerSchool this was already in place and all
stakeholders were already comfortable using it.
  • Gradebook
  • Parent Access
  • Teacher Access
  • Student Access

13
Learning Management System Solution
  • Angel/MyElearning
  • ANGEL is a place where the teachers can tie all
the elements of their classes together. ANGEL is
a virtual locker one area where teachers and
students can keep all their materials together,
helping them become more efficient and better
    organized.
  • Once teachers have courses in ANGEL they can
easily modify and reuse the courses in
    consecutive years.

14
Infrastructure
  • We had three companies come and give bids.
  • Contracted with ESU 10 to choose, install and
supply tech support with Cisco System.
  • We felt this one area that had to work well.
  • We both wanted security and ease of use.
  • We wanted it to work seamlessly with our LAN.

15
Cisco- Secured Wireless Solution
  • single broadcast SSID over all 802.11 bands
(a/b/g) using WPA encryption with RADIUS
    authentication
  • Our wireless infrastructure is comprised of Cisco
    access points
  • HP Procurve Power over Ethernet switches
  • CAT6 cabling to all access point locations
  • Cisco Wireless LAN Solution Express device to
manage current and future access points.
  • It will also detect rogue devices, dynamically
manage power levels to adjust for loss or
addition of an access point, and automatically
make changes to the configurations of any and/or
all access points on demand or on a scheduled
    basis.

16
Access anywhere in the building and allows users
to move about the building without dropping
connection.
  • We can't emphasize enough that the high level of
performance that we see on our wireless networks
is closely linked to the quality of hardware and
infrastructure we purchased as well as an
    adequate number of access points.
  • This kind of performance is simply not possible
with consumer wireless products, poor quality
cabling, and sparse numbers of access points.

17
Only authenticated users have access to our LAN
  • We have setup a domain certificate authority to
hand out certificates to all domain computers
    automatically
  • An Internet Authentication server to handle the
authentication of users and computers wanting to
    utilize the wireless network
  • GPO's to send out the certificate and wireless
client settings to eliminate the need for
configuration by administrators or end users.
  • This allows network administrators to do nothing
more than join a laptop to the domain and upon
restart, any domain user can login to the
computer with their network account and already
be attached to the wireless network with access
    to any and all resources.
  • In terms of security, WPA encryption is second
only to the next generation WPA2 encryption,
which many legacy wireless adapters cannot use.
All of our new laptops, access points, and
operating systems are capable of using this which
will allow us to upgrade to this when we are
certain that legacy systems are not going to be
    an issue.

18
Managed System
  • Wireless devices that use any of the 802.11 a, b,
or g bands can communicate with the wireless
network provided they are able to do WPA
    encryption with 802.1x (RADIUS) authentication
(also referred to as WPA-Enterprise or WPA-TKIP).
  • Since all settings are centralized, changes can
be made easily at the server and pushed out to
all clients when they next attach to the network.
  • You get to control access to your network by
determining who gets a certificate and forcing
    them to have network credentials.
  • Non-domain machines can use your network as long
as a network administrator installs a certificate
(30 second process) and gives a valid username
and password to a network guest

19
Offline file synchronization
  • You can make network files available offline by
storing shared files on your computer so they are
accessible when you are not connected to the
    network.

20
More on Offline Files
  • When you reconnect to the network, any changes
that you made to files while working offline are
updated to the network. This process is called
synchronization. If you and someone else on the
network made changes to the same file, you can
save your version of the file to the network,
keep the other version, or save both.
  • Any shared files or folders on a Microsoft
network can be made available offline

21
Tech Support
  • Created a new position to share ½ time between
both schools to help with hardware/software
    issues.

that will force you change your policy

25
