Ladder Gins, Spanish Windlass Anchors
2
What We Are Talking About
  • Ladder gin off engine
  • Spanish windlass anchors
  • Use of ladder with stokes for movement of victim

3
Ladder Gin Off Engine
  • Provides a high point anchor
  • Great in one direction
  • Does not offer good stability side-to-side
  • Fairly simple to erect
  • You must use a change of direction at base of
ladder if you desire to pull the load in any
direction another then in line with the ladder

4
Needed Components
  • Twenty-four foot extension ladder
  • Lash several rungs together to prevent accidental
    extension.
  • Rope for securing ladder
  • Four anchors
  • Two for each rope
  • Remember, we always use a back-up!
  • Use prusiks as they are adjustable

5
Ladder against tire
6
If there is a chance of loading the ladder from a
side use pickets next to the beams and lash to
the picket. Squad 1 is a perfect apparatus for
this to be done off of. Multiple 9000 anchors
points built in.
7
Tie a large figure eight on a bight in middle of
rope Run rope through top of ladder Ropes run
down the side to the anchors
  • For the high point anchor
  • Use the loop from the figure 8
  • Secure a piece of webbing to two rungs

8
May also use two figure 8s on a bight about 4
apart. Run each through the ladder and over top
of the beam. Space in between should hang down
for High Point Anchor.
Watch the angle of the anchor (lt90)
Dont tie off other ropes to the rungs!!! We have
a high point anchor.
9
Can add a simple tensioning system 31 Z Rig,
while setting up to adjust the angle later after
load is applied when the ladder gin moves.
Secure the rope with prusiks Ensure you use two
prusiks Adjust the ladder angle to 70 degrees
10
Ladder should be set to the proper climbing angle
Apply a load to adjust properly.

Spanish Windlass Anchor
  • Used when no anchor sources are available
  • Requires the use of concrete stakes
  • Mostly used by wilderness SAR teams
  • Also used for USAR
  • Each one of these anchors is rated at 4,000
    pounds
  • Thus, we need to build two of these to meet our
    goals

3 stakes
2 Stakes
1 stake
Drive stakes into the ground 2/3of the way Leave
the distance of the length of a stake between
the sets of stakes Lash the stakes together Use
another stake to tighten the lashing until the
stake starts to move
13
Loading
  • This is known as a 3-2-1 picket
  • Holds 4,000 pounds
  • So build two
  • Keep load in line with the anchor
  • Many variables, including
  • Soil, moisture content, picket material, etc.

4 6 Turns
Ground!
15 Degrees

Use of Ladder To Move Victims
  • Dont forget you can attach a long backboard to a
    14 foot roof ladder
  • This allows you to hand the ladder with the
    patient up or down levels
  • Good for structural collapse, where you have to
move a victim from one floor to another
