  • Estimating traffic delay due to controlled
intersections is a vital part of transportation
planning and many other aspects of city life.
Knowing traffic delay can help with optimizing
cycle time for traffic lights, planning emergency
vehicle routes, and determining the level of
    service (LOS) of the intersection.
  • A program used to estimate traffic delays at
    controlled intersections would utilize Websters
    equation
  • d 0.38C(1-g/C)2/1-(g/C)(X) 173X2(X-1)
    (X-1)2 (16X/C)1/2
  • which has multiple user inputted variables such
as cycle length of the traffic signal (C),
effective green light time for the lane (g),
capacity for the lane (c), etc. The result, d,
is the average delay time of each individual
vehicle in a particular lane or lane group.

  • Our program would identify each lane group (e.g.
    left turn lane, north/south-bound lanes,
east/west-bound lanes, etc.) and display the
appropriate delay time in a visual layout of the
intersection similar to the diagram below.
