History of the CEOL Program
  • Bayer Institute for Health Care Communication
    (now Institute for Healthcare Communication)
    pilots a program at Southern Calif. Permanente
    Medical Group (SCPMG)
  • SCPMG had QI initiatives in end-of-life care
  • Task Forces in Ethics, Communication, EOL care
  • Had goals objectives needed program to
    implement
  • Bayer Institute joined with SCPMG to design,
    create, pilot, and produce another program, CEOL

Kaisers Vision
  • Involve all disciplines
  • Cover entire spectrum of palliative care
  • Very interactive - focus on communication
  • 1-hour modules that build on each other but can
    stand independently
  • No doom and gloom
  • Ready to pilot and launch in 9 months

  • Won the Sherman Award for Excellence in CME from
    the California Medical Association in 2001
  • Program participants include
  • 800 clinicians in Southern and Northern
    California regions of Kaiser Permanente
  • 100 clinicians in Providence Health System in
    Portland, Oregon

  • 103 clinicians at 2 sites had pre, post, 3 mo
    data
  • Significant pre-post improvements seen in
  • Knowledge
  • Importance of communication skills
  • Confidence in using the skills
  • Changes persisted for 3 months
  • Multi-session workshops better than marathon
