2Ingredients
Some ingredients of Lip Gloss/Lipstick are
-Waxsuch as-beeswax, candelilla wax, and
carnauba -Oilsuch as-mineral, caster,
lanolin, or vegetable oils -Alcohol
-Pigment
3History
History proves that the use of lip color was
common among the Sumerians, Egyptians, Syrians,
Babylonians, Persians, and Greeks. In the
sixteenth century, Englands Queen Elizabeth I
colored her lips with red mercuric sulfide, which
is now known to be poisonous. In Western society
during the last half of the nineteenth century
make-up was frowned upon. People that wore
make-up were either actresses, women with loose
morals, or both.
4By the twentieth century, modern American women
wanted respect, equal rights, and a little
glamour. Cosmetics, especially lipstick, were
accepted in society. By 1915 push up tubes were
available. Lip stick came in a wide range of
colors. Prices for lipsticks are relatively low
and with good quality. The tubes that hold
lipstick range from inexpensive plastic
dispensers for lip balms, to highly styled metal
for lip sticks.
5Manufacturing Process
The manufacturing process can be described in
three separate steps melting and mixing the lip
stick pouring the mixture into the tube and
packaging the product for sale. First, the
ingredients for the lipstick are melted and
mixed. The solution and liquid oils are then
blended with the color pigments. The mass is
poured into a mold. The lipstick is cooled.
6How lipstick effects the environment
There is little or no waste in the manufacture of
lipstick. The product is reused whenever possible
and the ingredients are expensive so they are
seldom thrown out. Normal manufacturing process
includes no by-products and waste portions of
lipstick will be thrown out along with cleaning
materials.
7Quality
Quality controlled procedures are strict, and the
product must meet government FDA standards.
Lipstick is the only cosmetic that can be eaten
or swallowed, so there are strict controls on
ingredients as well as the manufacturing process.
Lipstick is mixed and processed in a controlled
environment so it will be free of contamination.
The material is tested to insure that it meets
regulations.
8Future in Lipstick
Lipstick is the least expensive and the most
popular cosmetic in the world. Current estimates
put sales at closer to one-billion per year.
Manufacturers continue to introduce new types and
shades of lipstick, and there is a very wide
variety available at moderate costs. If cosmetics
remain in fashion, the market for lipstick will
continue to be strong.
