An Artist is Born
  • Born April 15, 1452 in Vinci Italy (near
    Florence)
  • Mother was Ser Piero, a peasant girl, who left
when he was a young child. He lived with his
father and had 17 step bothers and sisters.
  • He grew up in his fathers home in Vinci
  • Leonardo had access to scholarly texts, and was
    exposed to Vincis painting tradition.

Leonardo's First Works
  • At age 15, his father apprenticed him to the
renowned workshop of Andrea del Verrochio. He
    then showcased his talents.
  • A few of the first works of art that he created
here was the Baptism of Christ.
  • Leonardo was so good, he was better than his
master. This made them mad and he was banned
    from painting.
  • In 1482, he served for the Duke of Milan. He
spent 17 years here. During this time, he really
hit his groove and started making real
masterpieces. The Duke kept Leonardo busy with
painting and sculpting, designing weaponry, and
much more. From 1485-1490, he studied many
    subjects, like math and geometry.

The "Renaissance Man"
  • Leonardo da Vincis interests were so great that
    he was very
  • interested in new subjects. But this caused him
    to not finish any
  • work because he was so anxious to move to a new
    subject.
  • It took Leonardo 6 years to finish The Last
    Supper and Virgin
  • On the Rocks.
  • He left many projects unfinished. This is why
    many of his works
  • are so good, because he procrastinates and takes
    a long time
  • making them.
  • Leonardo spent most of his time studying science
    and doing things
  • with nature. Because of his love to learn, he
    kept journals and notebooks
  • With 4 major themes painting, architecture,
    elements of mechanic, and
  • Human anatomy.

The Mona Lisa
  • Leonardo started the Mona Lisa at the age of 24
    in 1503.
  • It was supposedly painted for Francesco di
Bartolommeo di Zanobi del Giocondo. He was one
of the noblest citizens of Florence. He had
orded Leondardo to paint a portrait of his wife
Lisa di Antonio Maria di Noldo Gherardini.
  • Leonardo worked on Mona Lisa for 4 years. When
he finished the painting, he didnt give it to
Francesco because he either wasnt done with it
yet, or he loved it too much.
  • The Mona Lisa is one of the most famous paintings
on earth because it was stolen on August 21, 1911
by an Italian thief who brought it to Italy, and
emerged in Florence 2 years later.
  • The Monal Lisa has also had been damaged by an
acid attempt in 1956. It took many years to
    restore it.

Biblical Art Work
  • Leonardo was told to paint about the Last Supper
by his employer Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan.
  • The Last Supper is so big it covers an entire
    wall
  • It took Leonardo da Vinci from 1495-1498 to
finish this project. This wasnt unusual of
course because of Leonardos skill of
    procrastinating.
  • The Last Supper is so significant because of the
realism in the disciples and Jesus, especially
their emotions. All of the disciples are looking
at Jesus, who is blessing his body and blood.
  • The Last Supper depicts events in all 4 of the
Gospels. It shows the night before Jesus was
betrayed and nailed to the cross.

Other Famous Works
  • Madonna of the Rocks was one of the first works
he did in Milan, but it is just as good as any
    other painting.
  • It shows the Immaculate Mary and the children of
God. It represents how God and his followers are
holy and kind to others and care about the world.
  • This is one of the few masterpieces that Da Vinci
    completed in his lifetime.

What an Inspiration
  • Sadly, Leonardo died on May 2, 1519 in Cloux,
France. King Francis was apparently at his side,
cradling his head in his arms.
  • Leonardo has been a huge inspiration towards the
world for many, many centuries. Not only were
his works amazing pieces of art that everyone
admired, but they told about the religion and how
passionate people should be about their religion.
  • Not only did Leonardo da Vinci just make great
paintings and sculptures, he designed machines
and weapons that are being used today, such as
the tank and war vehicles. They might not have
been possible back then, but they are being used
    today.
  • People should not just think of Leonardo da Vinci
as the guy who created the Mona Lisa, but an
artist who showed talent through his learning
skills and passion for his religion.
