    working with hundreds of students and staff
    members as you acquire media and research skills,
    clerical skills, and a general knowledge of the
    operation of a library.
  • You will develop a very important skillthe art
    of working with people in a business environment.
  • You must have a positive , pleasant, and willing
    attitude to succeed in this course.
  • You will be in a training program that keeps you
    a step ahead of your fellow students. (You will
    be assisting them in the media center when
    needed.)
  • You must be able to work independently and be
    responsible for using your time productively.

The Purpose of a School Media Center
To provide resources and services relevant to the
school's curriculum and to the students, the
faculty and the administration.

Circulation
  • Providing information on the media centers
    services hours, policies, procedures, etc.
  • Checking resources in and out
  • Shelving books
  • Filing magazines
  • Helping patrons locate materials

  • Assisting with inventories
  • Maintaining magazine display racks and backfiles
  • Keyboarding (bibliographies, lists, memos, etc.)

Guidlines For Media Assistants
  • I know media center procedures.
  • I show initiative.
  • I offer assistance to students.
  • I wear my nametag.
  • I follow directions.
  • I inform staff whether or not I have completed
    the assigned task by the end of the period.
  • I show initiative by asking if there is anything
    else I can do.

  • I shelve books regularly and check my assigned
    shelves.

    straightening furniture and shelving stray books.

Dewey Decimal System of Classification
  • Melvin Dewey devised a numbering system using
    numbers 000-999 for ten broad subject classes of
    nonfiction books.
  • Each subject class was divided into ten
    divisions, and each division was then subdivided
    into related topics.
  • It would be useful for you as a media assistant
    to learn the ten main Dewey classes.

Fiction
  • The symbol F or FIC is placed over the first
    three letters of the authors last name to
    provide a call number and shelf location.
  • Fiction books are shelved in alphabetical order
    by the authors last names. Two or more books by
    the same author would be shelved alphabetically
    by titles.
  • Two authors with the same last name would be
    alphabetized by their first names.

Story Collection
  • The symbol SC with the first three letters of the
    authors, editors, or compliers last name
    underneath is used to make the call number.
  • Story collection books are shelved in
    alphabetical order by the authors, editors, or
    compliers last names.

Nonfiction
  • Dewey Decimal Classification on numbers identify
    the subject class and have the first three
    letters of the authors last name underneath to
    make the call number.
  • Nonfiction is shelved in numerical order,
    beginning with the lowest number on the left.
  • When two or more Dewey Decimal numbers are
    identical, books are shelved in alphabetical
    order by the authors last names.
  • When two or more call numbers (Dewey Decimal
    Numbers and author letters) are identical, check
    the authors last names.

Biography
  • The symbol B is used with the name of the person
    the book is written about.
  • The Biography section is arranged alphabetically
    by the name of the person the book is about.
  • When two or more biography or autobiography call
    numbers are identical, the same rules apply as
    for nonfiction.
  • When several authors have written books about the
    same person, check the title page for the
    authors name and arrange all books about one
    person in order by the authors name.
  • An autobiography is the story of a persons life
    written by himself. It has the call number
    derived from the symbol B and his name, and is
    shelved alphabetically with other biographies.

Collective Biography
  • The number 920 is used with the first three
    letters of the authors or editors last name.
  • The books in the Collective Biography section are
    arranged alphabetically by the authors last
    names.
  • When two or more collective biography call
    numbers are identical, the same rules apply as
    for nonfiction.

  • The symbol PROF is used about the Dewey Decimal
    Classification number and the first three letters
    of the authors last name to derive the call
    number.
  • Professional materials are shelved in numerical
    order and alphabetized by the author letters
    according to the same rules as for nonfiction.

  • The symbol R and REF is located about the Dewey
    Decimal Classification Number and the first three
    letters of the authors last name or main entry
    name.
  • Reference material is shelved in numerical order
    and alphabetized by the author letters according
    to the same rules for nonfiction.

North Carolina Collection
  • The symbol NC is placed above the Dewey Decimal
    Classification Number in specified locations on
    the media and on the cards in the card catalog.
  • The North Carolina Collection is shelved by Dewey
    Decimal Classification and includes fiction,
    nonfiction, and biographical materials.
