Assistive Technology
  • Assistive Technology is required by the
    Individuals with Disability Act of 1997 (IDEA)
  • The IDEA defines two aspects of AT
  • 1. Assistive Technology Devices
  • 2. Assistive Technology Services

Assistive Technology Device
  • IDEA 300.5 Definition
  • Assistive technology device means any item, piece
    of equipment, or product system, whether acquired
    commercially off the shelf, modified, or
    customized, that is used to increase, maintain,
    or improve functional capabilities of children
    with disabilities. 300.5 Authority 20 U.S.C.
    Chapter 33, Section 1401 (25)

Assistive Technology Devices
  • Assistive technology is specialized hardware,
    software and adaptive tools and aids used by
    students with disabilities to increase their
    ability to participate in tasks of learning and
    daily living to function as independently as
    possible.

Assistive Technology Devices
  • Assistive technology devices can range from low
    technology to high technology solutions which
    allow students to be independent.
  • Examples include a high technology solution
    using a lap top computer with switch access to
    enable a physically challenged student to write.
    Or, a low tech solution where a special spoon
    will allow a student to eat independently.

Assistive Technology Service
  • Assistive technology service is defined in the
    IDEA 300.6 as
  • Any service that directly assists an individual
    with a disability in the selection, acquisition,
    or use of an assistive technology device

Assistive Technology Service Includes
  • (A) the evaluation of needs including a
    functional evaluation, in the childs customary
    environment
  • (B) purchasing, leasing or otherwise providing
    for the acquisition of assistive technology
    devices

Assistive Technology Service Includes
  • (C) selecting, designing, fitting, customizing,
    adapting, applying, maintaining, repairing, or
    replacing of assistive technology devices
  • (D) coordinating and using other therapies,
    interventions, or services with assistive
    technology devices, such as those associated with
    existing education and rehabilitation plans and
    programs

  • (E) training or technical assistance for an
    individual with disabilities, or where
    appropriate, the family members, guardians,

  • (F) Training or technical assistance for
    professionals (including individuals providing
    education and rehabilitation services), employers
    or others who provide services to employ, or are
    otherwise, substanically involved in the major
    life functions of children with disabilities.

300.6 Assistive Technology Requirements
  • Each public agency shall ensure that assistive
    technology devices or assistive technology
    services or both, as those terms are defined in
    300.5-300.6 are made available to a child with a
    disability if required as a part of the childs

  • Is provided within Special Education under IDEA
    300.17
  • As Related services under IDEA 300.16
  • Through provision of Supplementary aids and
    services under IDEA 300.550(b)(2).

Section 614(d)(3)(B) Consideration of Special
Factors
  • The 1997 IDEA amendment requires by law that the
    IEP Team must consider the assistive technology
    needs for every student.
