Philae Status
SWT
  • Stephan Ulamec
  • SWT, September 4-6, 2006, Helsinki

2
Overview
  • Operations Activities
  • Status of Lander (Subsystems and P/L)
  • Planning

3
General Remarks
  • Since the last LOWG (January 06) Philae was
switched on during 3 operational blocks
  • Passive Checkout PC2
    (07./08.03.06)
  • Battery charging sequence
    (08./09.05.06)
  • Passive Checkout PC3
    (28./29.08.06)
  • Operations Activities all very successful
  • Problems / Areas of concern (remaining)
  • Increased secondary battery discharge
  • Temperature gradients inside Lander higher than
    estimated
  • DPU1 booting problem at low temperatures
  • ADS pressure measurement indicates loss of gas

4
Philae In-flight Operations
  • Results
  • In general nominal behaviour of the Lander units,
    some features have to be
  • monitored during the upcoming activities in
    2006/2007
  • DPU1 cannot be switched ON at low
temperaturesReset command or heating has to be
applied if YEBox temp is below -26degC
  • Secondary Battery self discharge higher than
expectedRecharge performed in May and to be
    performed during PC4
  • ADS pressure sensor indicates low tank
    pressureInvestigation ongoing (PC4)
  • Lander overall temperature decreaseThe Lander
temperature level decreased by about -5deg after
the Earth Swing-by. For PC1 the temperature at
Power ON of some unit electronics were already
below -40degC, which was defined as the
    operational limit.

5
NCRs (I)
  • ESS Event Strategy
  • RMOC is flooded by high amount of created ESS
    events
  • Status Separate ESS event packet store provided
by RMOC, dump with priority of science data
  • Temporary solution for Cruise Phase accepted at
    RMOC and LCC
  • ESS PID106 packet generation processing
  • Packets, stamped with PID106 by ESS (Bad
telemetry) are discarded on-board the Orbiter.
  • Status Under investigation at LCC
  • Support by ESS SW provider (CAPTEC) is probably
    needed

6
NCRs (II)
  • CDMS DPU-overswitch
  • Increase RF link robustness by introducing
    TM-Backup Mode
  • Status implemented in the upcoming CDMS SW
    Version
  • PID106 packets may occur since ESS-CDMS protocol
is not applied(Rx OFF) during data transfer -gt
to be checked against Anomaly with PID106 packets
  • CDMS-patch upload during PC4
  • CDMS Mass Memory Handling
  • Unpredictable dump behavior due to Mass Memory
H/W problems. Solution by S/W means
  • Status of development- Mass Memories can be
used as RAM- Mass Memory behavior after power
    cycle still needs improvements
  • -gt Impact on operation preparation for comet
    phase

7
NCRs (III)
  • Unit - CDMS interface
  • Missing, corrupted or duplicated data or science
    blocks
  • Status- CDMS improvements in the upcoming CDMS
    SW Version
  • ROMAP
  • High voltage problem (SPM and Penning)
  • Status stand-by
  • Checkout during PC4 (HV levels 4 and 5)
  • COSAC
  • Oven did not heat as expected
  • Status troubleshooting planned for Active
    Checkout 2006
  • Test during PC4
  • ADS
  • Low tank pressure
  • Status investigation ongoing with unit provider
  • Checkout during PC4

8
