The designs known as Celtic in early Christian
art were integrated from an ancient Celtic past.
Representation of humans and animals was
purposely NOT realistic but abstract or
idealistic. Many of the interlacings from the
Book of Kells and the Book of Durrow include
beasts entwined in some neverending struggle.
The entwinings seem vegetable or organic, and
though geometrically intricate, they are not
what we typically think of as hard edged
geometric shapes. The Book of Kells was dug up
by a peasant boy in Ireland in the 16th century
(perhaps hidden in the ground from Viking
marauders, surviving 1000 years in a wooden and
metal box). Our watercolors were not as durable
