What is AVID?
  • AVID (or Advancement via Individual
    Determination) was designed by a San Diego
    teacher, Mary Catherine Swanson, to help the
    students in the middle get the skills they
    needed to go to college.
  • AVID is an elective class that is part of a
    complete college preparatory program.

A Sample Week in the AVID Elective...
  • Monday - AVID Curriculum
  • Tuesday Tutorials with college tutors
  • Wednesday - AVID Curriculum
  • Thursday Tutorials with college tutors
  • Friday - Binder evaluation, field trips,
    motivational speakers or classroom activities

What is the AVID Curriculum?
  • Writing, Reading, Inquiry and Collaboration are
    the basis for the AVID curriculum.
  • College and career information is disseminated at
    this time as are strategies for success such as
    Cornell note taking.

What are AVID Tutorials?
  • College tutors attend our AVID elective twice a
    week participating in collaborative study groups,
    writing groups and Socratic Seminars.

AVID Probation Notices
  • In order to maintain the rigor of the AVID
    program students who receive a D or F in one
    or more classes will be put on probation for that
    trimester.
  • These students will be sent a probation notice
    which outlines the recommended supports in order
    to improve their grades.
  • Students who do not raise their grades will be
    dropped from the AVID program.
  • Remember AVID stands for Advancement via
    Individual Determination!

Who is a typical AVID student?
  • AVID is designed for students who
  • Have average to high SAT-9 scores
  • 2.0-3.5 GPA
  • Have the potential to go to college with some
    support
  • Show individual desire and DETERMINATION to be
    successful

Who is a typical AVID student?
  • Students must also meet one or more of the
    following criteria
  • First in their family to attend college
  • Historically underrepresented in 4-year colleges
  • Lower socioeconomic status
  • Special circumstances

Why AVID?
  • Students who have been enrolled in AVID for at
    least 3 years graduate and enter college at a
    rate of 93 according to a study at UCSD.
  • AVID has been an integral part of BMMS since
    1995. AVID is also offered at both Mt. Carmel
    High School and Westview.
