• Hans Christian Andersen was born on April 2nd,
  1805 in Odense, Denmark.
• He was born into a family of little means, and
  his early life was a struggle.

His Early Years

• At fourteen years of age, he went to Copenhagen
  where he won the patronage of several prominent
  citizens and acquired a limited amount of
  schooling.

His First publications

• 1835 was the year that his first collection of
  tales was published, Tales Told For Children.

The little mermaid

• Den Lille Havfrue, in Danish, was inspired by a
  lost love .
• Her serene statue sits on a rock in the port of
  Copenhagen, and is a wonderful monument to the
  tale.

• Hans beloved fairy tales have charmed readers
  all over the world for over a hundred years, and
  will be a legacy for future generations of
  children to discover.

• His stories reveal a vision rich in
  humour, sharp with irony, and
  reflect both the sadness and joy of life.
• We weep with the little match girl and laugh at
  the Emperor in his new clothes.

In Denmark there are countless monuments to this
famous storyteller and roads named after him. He
is always depicted with a book in his hand.

• Hans autobiography, entitled The Fairy Tale of
  My Life, reflects a career that might well have
  come out of one of his tales.
• He was never accepted in high society in
  Copenhagen, and is perhaps like the Little
  Mermaid who never won the love of her prince.

• The highest honours in Denmark have been bestowed
  upon him.
