Title: Teaching Your Dog Commands
1Teaching Your Dog Commands
Emily Autumn Love EDTC 6030 Summer 2003
2 This is a short effective way to learn to
communicate with your dog.
To navigate through the program use the bottoms
at the bottom right hand Corner.
3 This is Mikey my Boxer who I have trained many
commands such as sit, stay and also tricks that
I did not teach him (he must me smart!)
4Step One Learning the Sit Command
- Maintain eye contact and gently place your dog
into the sit position, repeat the command and
reward him with a treat. - Another way is to take a food treat and place it
above his nose, so he has to sit to reach the
treat.
5Step Two Learning the Stay Command
- Begin slowly with your dog because this is a
difficult command. Initially, praise your dog if
he is still for 5 seconds. Then gradually
increase the time. After he begins to sit still
for a few seconds, begin to move away. - If he does not stay, you may have moved too far
or waited to long. Just place him in the sit
positions again, and decrease the distance and
time.
6Step Three Learning the Heel Command
- Place your dog onto a leash, have him sit to your
left side. Hold the leash like to you would
pull, and using your dogs name say Mikey,
heel! That tells your dog to move. If he runs
ahead of you, execute a quick U-turn. - He will now be forced to move with you. When he
catches up to you make sure to praise him. - Repeat as many times as needed.
7Step Three Learning the Heel Command Continue
- You now need to teach your dog to walk next to
you. Seat him to your left and say Mikey,
heel! and begin to move. If he moves ahead of
your left leg, pull the leash in a corrective
jerk motion (not hard), and U-turn again. - Repeat this exercise.
8Tips
- Make sure to be consistent. Do not tell your dog
to sit and only follow through occasionally. - Speak in a confident tone. Tell him that you are
in charge. - Use treats at the beginning of training but use
less treats after you dog knows the command. - Use a leash as an aid to help you maintain your
positions as the leader. - Avoid para-language, when you say one thing
(No), but do another (rub your dogs head). - Make sure to end all training sessions on a good
note. Praise him when he obeys.
