After the War

• U.S., Britain, France, and Soviet Union meet to
  discuss post-war issues.
• Had to deal with Germany in a way that wouldnt
  lead to another war.

Dealing with Germany

• Divided Germany into four zones.
• Germanys capital Berlin was also divided into
  four zones.
• Soviet zone was communist other three were
  capitalist.
• Other three combined to create West Germany and
  West Berlin.
• Soviet zone became East Germany and East Berlin.

Truman Doctrine

• BasicallyTruman said it was the job of the U.S.
  to prevent the spread of communism.
• Containment is preventing the spread of communism.

The Cold War Begins

• What was the main conflict?
• Republic vs. Dictatorship? (politics)
• Capitalism vs. Communism? (economy)
• What was the U.S. government most worried about?
• Economy!!! Actually befriended MANY dictators
  during this era who supported capitalism.
• What were the American people most worried about?
• Politics!!! Wrongly associated communism (and
  socialism) with loss of political freedom
  w/dictators.
