EndNote Bibliographic management publication
  • Whats EndNote good for
  • to create a personal collection of
    bibliographic references, containing all types
    of documents (journal articles, books, patents,
    etc.)
  • Start in EndNote with
  • the introduction of the references you need,
    read want to cite,doing it manually or better,
    by direct connection to or import from the
    bibliographic databases which covers best your
    research domain (Web of Science, SciFinder,
    PubMed, GoogleScholar, publisher sites, etc.)
  • EndNote manages
  • sorting, de-duplication, edition adds-in for
    references (i.e. attachments) preparation
    export of custom-lists for your next publication
    (i.e. text edition)formatting references in a
    selected journal style
  • CWYW "cite while you write" directly in your
    text edition
  • by exporting complete reference lists to a Word
    document or better by selecting the references
    in your EndNote library while you
    write/modify/complete your chapters in Word

Start with EndNote
  • Either on the PCs at the Sciences-II library
    where EndNote-X2 is already installed OR
  • Get the program for installation on your PC (you
    need an e-mail address at ltunige.chgt)

  • Open EndNote and create a New Reference Library ?

    your personal collection

Building your bibliography
  • There are 4 possibilities to introduce your
    references in EndNote-X2
  • 1. Direct connection from EndNote to a
    bibliographic database
  • ? Online Search or Menu Tools
    Online Search
  • examples Web of Science SCI (ISI), PubMed
    (NLM), etc.
  • 2. Import a saved literature file containing the
    selected references from your bibliographic
    database search for example in SciFinder Scholar,
    MathSciNet, GeoRef, etc.(save  tagged  ? .txt)
    Import to EndNote ? Menu File Import or
    directly choose the correct import filter ? list
    select the bibliographic databases, i.e.
    Scifinder(CAS)
  • 3. Export reference(s) often only one at a time
    from a web site ? examples publisher sites
    like Blackwell or Wiley-InterScience (Download
    Citation)
  • 4. Introduce new references manually or
    edit/modify incomplete references

  • After retrieving the references resulting from
    the online search
  • in Web of Science Author Kundig ,
    Title,KW,Abs asymmetric
  • Select and display a reference in one of the
    generic styles numbered

Reference (1) visualization / edition
  • With a double-click on the reference (Menu
    References Edit References),
  • the edit mode is activated, then the fields can
    manually be modified or completed
  • ? examples of typical adds Keywords, URL, DOI,
    Figure, File Attachments

Reference (2) adds links
  • For manual adds enter to a selected field and
    add notes directly.
  • To get all options of a field, a right click
    displays the possible options (e.g. File
    Attachments)
  • Attention by default an attachment is a
    relative link, therefore a pdf file is located
    in the .DATA directory (in test.DATA containing
    all configuration files for test.enl)

Managing your references (1)
  • Sorting references in ascending or descending, in
    alphabetical or numerical order ? one column
    with a simple click on the column heading?

  • Checking for duplicates and elimination of
    references created by double import from
    different bibliographic databases ? Menu

  • Changing the library display of your reference

    information to a large number of references,
    examples personal keywords, notes, updates,
    etc.

Search Result,right click ? add references to ?

Formatting the references Output Styles
  • Goal Assigning a specific publisher journal
    style (e.g. Angew. Chem.) by formatting your
    reference list in EndNote, than export it to your
    Word document

Exporting complete reference lists from EndNote
to Word
  • After the assignment of the Journals Output
    Style (e.g. Angew. Chem.),
  • select the publications in EndNote which will
    compose your reference list
