Title: The Holy Spirit
1The Holy Spirit
- His gifts of competency, freedom and being
transformed into the likeness of the Lord - II Corinthians 217-318
2The one who commends himself vs. The one whom the
Lord commends
- The Holy Spirits gift of competency
- II Corinthians 217-313
3Application
- You are competent!
- I Corinthians 127 Now to EACH ONE (ekasto) the
manifestation of the Spirit is given for the
common good. -
4Freedom and Transformation
5Freedom to understand the Scriptures
- Even to this day when Moses (the Scriptures) is
read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever
anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit
of the Lord is, there is freedom.
II Corinthians 315-17 - The man without the Spirit does not accept the
things that come from the Spirit of God, for they
are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand
them, because they are spiritually discerned.
The spiritual man discerns all things I
Corinthians 214-15
6National Freedom
- National security If you fully obey the Lord
your God and carefully follow the commands I give
you today, the Lord your God will set you high
above all the nations on earthThe Lord will
grant that the enemies who rise up against you
will be defeated before youHowever, if you do
not obey the Lord your God, The Lord will cause
you to be defeated before your enemies.
Deuteronomy 281-25
7Freedom to worship
- The Lord says, let my people go, so that they
may worship me. Exodus 423 716 81,20 91
913 103 - Our founders also left a country because of
religious persecution to begin a nation where
there would be freedom to worship, NOT freedom
from worship.
8George Washington
- What students would learn in American schools
above all is the religion of Jesus Christ.
--Washington
9Benjamin Franklin
- God governs in the affairs of man. And if a
sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his
notice, is it probable that an empire can rise
without His aid? We have been assured in the
Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the
house, they labor in vain that build it. I
firmly believe this. I also believe that,
without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in
this political building no better than the
builders of Babel Ben Franklin
10Patrick Henry
- It cannot be emphasized too clearly and too
often that this nation was founded, not by
religionists, but by Christians not on religion,
but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very
reason, peoples of other faiths have been
afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of
worship here.Patrick Henry
11Freedom from bondage to sin
- Romans 620-22 When you were slaves to sin, you
were free from the control of righteousness.
What benefit did you reap at that time from the
things you are now ashamed of? Those things
result in death! But now that you have been set
free from sin and have become slaves to God, the
benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the
result is eternal life. - Ecclesiastes 88 wickedness will not release
those who practice it.
12Freedom from fear
- For you did not receive a spirit that makes you
a slave to fear, but you received the Spirit of
sonship. And by Him The Spirit we cry, Abba,
Father. Rom 815 - Jesus shared in their humanity so that by His
death He might destroy him who holds the power of
deaththat is, the deviland free those who all
their lives were held in slavery by their fear of
death. (Hebrews 214-15)
13Freedom from fear of judgment
- I John 417-18 we will have confidence on the
day of judgment, because in this world we are
like Him. There is no fear in love. But perfect
love drives out fear, because fear has to do with
punishment. The one who fears is not made
perfect in love.
14Freedom from working for salvation
- Galatians 35,48-9 51 Does God give you His
Spiritbecause you observe the law, or because
you believe?...But now that you know Godor
rather are known by Godhow is it that you are
turning back to those weak and miserable
principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them
all over again?...It is for freedom that Christ
has set us free. Stand firm then, and do not let
yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of
slavery.
15Freedom in our daily living
- Freedom from anger
- Freedom from anxiety and worry
- Freedom in your daily conversation
- Freedom from idols and distractions
16The Gift of being transformed into the Lords
likeness
- II Corinthians 318
- Notice who is transforming us...The Spirit!
- Notice whose likeness we are being transformed
intoThe Spirit!
17The Gift of being transformed into the Lords
likeness
- The Fruit of the Spirit Love, Joy, Peace,
Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness,
Gentleness, Self-Control - I John 32 But we know that when He appears, we
shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
18Prayer and Praise to the Holy Spirit
- Prayer to the Holy Spirit is very appropriate,
especially in areas that are specific to His
ministry, but probably shouldnt be the overall
emphasis of our prayer life. - The Holy Spirit is fully God and powerful to
answer prayer. Christians in the NT communicated
with Him. - Acts 132 In response to prayer, the Holy Spirit
DIRECTLY answers the Christians at Antioch to
the work for which HE has called them. - Acts 1528 The will of the Holy Spirit was known
by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem. This
also implies direct communication with Him. - Acts 2023 The Holy Spirit communicates DIRECTLY
to Paul - OT Ezekiel 379 Prophesy to the breath and
say to it, Come from the four winds, O breath,
and breathe into these slain, that they may
live. ruah spirit or breath - NT Praying in the Spirit (Ephesians 618, Jude
20) - To say that we cannot pray to the Holy Spirit is
really saying that we cannot talk to Him or
relate to Him personally, which hardly seems
right. He also relates to us in a personal way
--Grudem

22The Holy Spirit written on our hearts
23CROWN HIM WITH MANY CROWNS Crown Him with many
crowns, The Lamb upon His throne Hark! How the
heavnly anthem drowns all music but its
own! Awake my soul and sing, Of Him who died for
thee And hail Him as thy matchless King Through
all eternity. Crown Him the Lord of love!
Behold His hands and side Rich wounds, yet
visible above, In beauty glorified No angel in
the sky, Can fully bear that sight, But downward
bends His wondring eye at mysteries so
bright. Crown Him the Lord of life! Who
triumphed oer the grave Who rose victorious to
the strife for those He came to save His glories
now we sing, Who died and rose on high Who died
eternal life to bring, And lives that death may
die. Crown Him the Lord of Heavn! One with the
Father known, One with the Spirit through Him
givn, From yonder glorious throne! To Thee be
endless praise, For Thou for us hast died Be
Thou, O Lord, through endless days Adored and
magnified.
