Title: Ethnocultural Awareness
1 Ethno-cultural Awareness
- Who I am and where I stand!
- Larah E Erickson
2Am I more than I seem to be?

- Scottish, Native American, Native Australian
(Koori), by the grace of God. - I love to travel and explore new countries on my
own. - Diverse and thrive on diversity.
- I speak two languages fluently and am learning
two more.
3Multicultural Sensitivity in the Classroom
- I as the teacher I am interested in the culture
of each student. - I will attempt to meet each parent.
- I expect my students to help me understand their
culture. - I will demand that no negative labels be used in
my classes.
4 Boys and Girls
Play Nice Now!
I love being a heterosexual female. I have many
male and female friends. I have deep respect for
the homosexual couples in my group of friends,
they face fierce discrimination with such
dignity. I refuse to add to their fear. I
encourage healthy sexual practices within all
relationships.
5Quotes from My Students!
- Youre so cool. You dont care if we speak
Spanish in class! (Jorge V.) - Are you speaking Arabic? You dont think we are
terrorists?( Poryah D.)
Diversity now thats a beautiful picture.
6The Big Picture
We are all different and our differences make us
beautiful. A world where everyone was the same
would be boring. Enjoy the Excitement of
Diversity! Learn and Grow!
7Biases
I am biased against the kind of ignorance that
allows people to use negative stereotypes as an
excuse not to deal with people as
individuals. People are being hurt by others who
look at them with cautiousness because they are
Arab, Asian, Hispanic, African American, White or
any other ethnicity . Negative labels and racist
jokes hurt.
