Lesson Objective
Students will learn basic information about the
Iroquois Native Americans.  Information will
include location, culture, religion, names of
the different tribes, and historical dates.  The
students will be able to make a brochure to
present a slide show to their fellow classmates
with the tribe assigned to the small groups.

Introduction
  • The lesson will start with a KWL chart.  The
    teacher will get a large piece of paper to hang
    on the board.  The paper will be divided into 3
    parts Knowledge, Want to know, and learned. 
    Students will be asked by the teacher to give her
    information and any facts they know about Native
    Americans.  This will help the Teacher determined
    the level of information that the students
    already know about the Iroquois.

  • The next step to the KWL chart is to ask the
    students for ideas about what they would like to
    learn.  The KWL chart will help motivate the
    students to learn the topic because they will
    feel connected due to the want to know part of
    the chart.

Information
  • The KWL chart will give the teacher a rough idea
    of what the students already know. The book The
    Rough-Face will open up the topic of Native
    Americans in the Central New York area. The book
    The Iroquois by Richard Gaines will be read to
    the class, this book will then be available for
    the student to look over and use during free
    read.  Another way that the teacher will be
    giving information is through a fact sheet that
    will be handed out after the KWL chart is
    completed and the book is read. The fact sheet
    will be attached.  Technology will be presented
    by watching a You Tube video on the Iroquois.

Practice
  • The students will have prier knowledge to
    Microsoft Office, thus only a brief over view of
    the program will be needed to refresh the
    students on the basics of making a brochure.  The
    students will be broken into small groups so that
    all six nations are represented.  The students
    will then be sent to the library to look for more
    information about each groups tribe.

Practice Contd
  • The practice of gathering information through
    books, magazines, and other Medias (with help of
    librarian) will help the students have material
    for the brochure. The teacher will then meet with
    each group to work out what kind of information
    was provided, the students will help determined
    if the information they found will be enough to
    teach the class. Rubric and questions will be
    attached.

Knowledge of Results
  • While the students are making the brochure, the
    teacher will watch and ask to have the students
    present the information to her before the
    information is presented to the class.  Thus
    allowing the students to have feed back on how
    the facts are coming along, as well as feed back
    on how the brochure looks. (fonts, back grounds,
    pictures, and set up). Written feed back will
    come at the end after the groups have presented
    and the rubric will be filled out and handed back
    to each student.

Review Activity
  • I will end the lesson by having the students
    work together to fill in the L part of the chart
    (learned).  This will conclude the lesson and the
    teacher will then prompt the students to describe
    if they enjoyed the project or what they would
    like to change.

Assessment
  • The assessment would be a unit test with multiple
    choices about the different tribes and people
    that were involved with the Iroquois.
