Title: CPI Oil Analysis Program
1CPI Oil Analysis Program
Bryan Dole CPI Engineering Services, Inc. June
19, 2001
2What Influences Oil Life
- Temperature
- 195-220F Shortens the Life by 1/2
- 220F Shortens the Life by 1/2 again
- Contamination
- By Other Oils
- Chemical Ingestion
- Previously Oxidized Oil
3Importance of Lubricant Analysis Program
- Detects contamination by other fluids or airborne
materials - Measures additive levels
- Allows prediction of expected lubricant life
- Monitors machine condition -i.e. wear or
corrosion - Corrective action items are communicated
4CPI Engineering Lubricant Analysis Program
- Test Fluid Integrity
- Measure Physical Chemical Properties
- Test for Contamination
- Other Lubricants/Fluids
- Process Fluids
- Particles
- Wear
- Other
- Communicate Results Recommendation Back to
Customer
5Technical Service Program Analytical Tests
- Kinematic Viscosity _at_ 40C ASTM D-445
- Acid Number ASTM D-974
- Antioxidant Level
- Metals Analysis
- Water by Karl Fischer
- Particle Count
6Technical Service Program Analytical Test
Kinematic Viscosity _at_ 40C ASTM
D-445 Kinematic viscosity is the property
measured when a fixed amount of an oil flows
through a capillary tube under the force of
gravity. The unit of Kinematic viscosity is the
stoke or centistoke. A 10 increase in viscosity
from a new fluid would be the fluids changing
point.
7Technical Service Program Analytical Test
Acid Number ASTM D-974 Acid number is a
number expressed in milligrams (mg) of
potassium hydroxide needed to neutralize the acid
in one gram of oil. An acid number of 1.0 would
be a standard changing point.
8Technical Service Program Analytical Test
Antioxidant Level HPLC (High Performance Liquid
Chromatography) is used to determine antioxidant
level. Antioxidants of used fluids are
compared to a top standard or new fluid. The
antioxidant level helps in determining the
sampling intervals.
9Technical Service Program Analytical Test
Metals Analysis Metals analysis consists of
both wear and additive metals. Any
metal appearing at a 5 ppm level or lower would
be considered normal. This instrument detects
metals present _at_ 6-10 microns. Water by Karl
Fischer Water content is reported in parts per
million (ppm). High water can result in
corrosion of the machine.
10Technical Service Program Analytical Test
Particle Count Particle count tells how many
particles are present at different micron sizes.
These are both metallic and non-metallic
particles. The ISO is the ratio between the
particles present _at_ 5 micron vs. the
particle present _at_ 15 micron. ISO is reported
like this 15/12. When the bottom number
exceeds 19 we will ask you to change your oil
filters. Additional Tests are available upon
request and may require a charge.
11Analytical Equipment
