What is the Church?

• The gathering of those who profess belief in
  Jesus Christ and are baptized into that faith.
• The active presence of Jesus in the world
• Carries on the mission of Jesus through the power
  of the Holy Spirit

Who is the Church???

• The Church then is made of believers
• All different ages, races, cultures
• WE are the Church!

Why is the Church???

• The church exists to give its members comfort and
  support and help them lead better lives
• The church exists for the world
• The church is a beacon of light, hope, and source
  of healing
• Meant to unite all of humanity

Mary Model of the Church

• Mary is our model
• She was
• Completely open to the Spirit
• Filled with grace

Mary Mother of the Church

• Through Mary, humanity and divinity were brought
  together in Jesus
• As the church, we try to bring the divine and
  human together
• So, Mary is mother of the church as well

Images of the Church

• We draw images of the church from the scriptures
• Church as
• The people of God
• The body of Christ
• The temple of the Holy Spirit

People of God

• But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a
  holy nation, a people for god's own possession,
  so that you may proclaim the excellencies of him
  who has called you out of darkness into his
  marvelous light. -1Peter 29
• The church is a community

Body of Christ

• For even as the body is one and yet has many
  members, and all the members of the body, though
  they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.
  For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one
  body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or
  free, and we were all made to drink of one
  Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many.
  1Cor. 12 12-14

The Temple of the Holy Spirit

• Do you not know that you are Gods temple and
  that the spirit of God dwells in you?...Gods
  temple is holy, and you are that temple.
  (1Corinthians 316-17)
• We are a people called the church
• Our bodies, our persons, house the spirit of God.
  
• We must respect ourselves, our bodies, and each
  other.
