1900s

• Day shoes were typically boots. Evening shoes
  were more diverse, with the popular style for
  women a court shoe with a small, Louis heel.

• A variety of materials were used in shoe
  construction, including leathers mixed with
  colored canvas to form two-toned "spectators."

1920

• The foot became a focal point of fashion. Shoe
  styles were influenced by crazes like the
  Charleston, a dance that demanded a securely
  fastened shoe with a low heel and closed toe.

1930

• Designers began to experiment with shoe fashion.
  Sandals were increasingly popular, reflected in
  strappy evening shoes with open toes

1940

• Overseas, leather was now restricted to military
  use, so shoe designers were forced to be
  increasingly clever. Trims and embellishments
  were kept to a minimum.

• The goal was for the slimmest heel possible,
  every color of the rainbow was used.
  Embellishments returned with a vengeance

• By turning fashion inside out, young people found
  an unexpected way to stir up society. Shoes
  reflected the rampant experimentation with color,

• Dressing to shock was popular. Designers took
  platform shoes to new heights. Others went for
  the natural look, hoping this approach might cast
  some sunshine over an otherwise dreary outlook.

• Designer labels were a proclamation of success
  for the emerging Yuppie. Power dressing was
  serious business. So was shopping

• Diversity has been a key concept in the 1990s and
  its influence is reflected in fashion.

• Shoes are no longer confined to a handful of
  styles they're available in every conceivable
  style and made for any occasion.
