About the Artist and the work of art.
  • The stool has special significance in the Asante
culture. According to a sacred legend, Komfo, a
priest and adviser to the eighteenth-century King
Tutu, received a golden stool from heaven. This
stool later was given to the Asante people as a
symbol of their power. The so-called Golden
Stool frequently appears in Asante art. When an
English colonial official demanded that it be
given to him in 1900, the Asante people staged a
rebellion. The Englishman did not understand
that the Golden Stool was no mere piece of
furniture- it symbolized the soul of the Asante.
