Testing for Iodine

• Extracting Iodine in Heptane

Aqueous Solution of Iodine

• Place a milliliter of the solution to be tested
  in a test tube.

Add Heptane

• Add a dropper full of heptane to the test tube.
• The organic solvent, Heptane, floats on the
  water.
• Flick the test tube to mix the two solutions.

Results

• After mixing, any Iodine present in the solution
  will show up in the heptane layer as a purple
  colour.
• This is a positive test for Iodine.
