Title: Macbeth

1
Macbeth
  • Act 3
  • Scenes 4-6

2
Scene 4
  • Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Ross, Lennox, the Lords
and Attendants all enter to join Macbeth in his
    banquet/feast.
  • Macbeth welcomes all who are present and asks
    them to be seated.
  • After his wife proclaims that she too is glad to
welcome the people at the table, one of Macbeths
    murderers comes to the door.
  • Macbeth approaches him and notices blood on his
face, which the murderer says that it is Banquos
blood. Macbeth asks if Banquo is dead or
dispatched. The murderer says that he got the
    job done.
  • Macbeth complements the murderer by telling him
he is the best throat cutter around, and then
says that he would be unequally good to any
murderer if he had also killed Fleance.
  • The murderer explains that Fleance has escaped.
Macbeth says to himself that he still has trouble
to deal with and that his spot on the throne
would be perfectly secure if Fleance was dead.
  • Macbeth asks if Banquo is safely hidden or
concealed as to where he cant be caught guilty
of the murder, and the murderer assures him of it.

3
  • After the murderer leaves, Lady Macbeth reminds
Macbeth that he did not give the cheer or toast.
She says that this is what the guests are waiting
on, and if they wanted to eat without a toast,
they would have had a better time at home.
  • After Macbeth came back to the table, his
servants and friends ask for his company and to
sit with them. Looking for a place to sit, he
realizes that the table is full and he does not
have a chair to sit in. Macbeth sees the ghost in
his seat and tells him that the ghost cant blame
Macbeth for his death. The people eating at the
table become worried and think that Macbeth is
    sick.
  • Lady Macbeth tries to calm down the crown by
saying that Macbeth is like this often, even
since a child. She tells the crowd to sit back
down and continue eating, that Macbeths fit will
be over soon. She says that he will only stop if
they ignore him. Then she pulls him to the side
and asks him what the heck is he doing, hes
looking like a fool, and made Macbeth look
suspicious. He tells her that there really is a
man in his seat and she tells him to stop being
    like a child and lying.
  • After discussing how bizarre this situation is,
the ghost leaves. Macbeth says that there have
been many deaths in the past, to terrible for the
ear to hear, but now these people are rising from
the dead even though their bodies have been
beaten, Macbeth sees this as being very strange.
Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth that his crowd misses
    him.
  • He sits down and fills up a cup of wine, and the
ghost enters again. What is ironic is Macbeth
gives a toast to Banquo. After the toast, Macbeth
sees the ghost and tells the ghost to leave his
    sight.
  • The crowd is very concerned now about their King,
but lady Macbeth assures them it is nothing, and
questioning will only make it worse.

4
  • Lady Macbeth sees the guests out of the room and
on their way and then talks to Macbeth, who asks
the time. Lady Macbeth says that it is almost
    morning.
  • Macbeth asks her what she thinks about Macduff
not coming to the party, but Lady Macbeth did not
    know he had invited him.
  • Macbeth said he did send to him and that he is
going to see the three witches tomorrow, because
he wants to know what will happen to him, even
    the worst things.
  • Lady Macbeth says that he need to sleep and the
scene ends with them going to sleep.

5
Scene 5
  • This scene opens up with the three witches
    meeting the witch Hecate.
  • The first witch tells Hecate that she looks very
    angry.
  • Hecate says that that she is mad because the
three witches troubled Macbeth causing many bad
deeds, and that they didnt let her be a part of
it. She tells them that Macbeth is coming in the
morning to know his destiny and to meet her in
the morning. When he comes, they will tell him
things to keep his hopes up above wisdom, grace
and fear. She says that security is mortals
biggest enemy, and security is what Macbeth
    relies on.
  • Hecate is called away and the three witch sisters
    make haste.

6
Scene 6
  • This scene opens with Lennox and another lord
discussing the recent events in Scotland.
  • Lennox starts out by stating the tragic events
that have occurred so far. He tells the lord how
tragic the death of Duncan was, and how Fleance
killed Banquo who was out too late in the night.
He tells the lord how it was so grieving for
Macbeth to have Duncan die, and that Macbeth was
noble in killing the two drunk guards who were
thought to have killed him. Lennox thinks that
Duncans own sons killed him, because they had
fled. He asks the lord where Macduff is living
    now.
  • The lord says that the son of Duncan lives in the
English court and is highly looked upon by the
King there. Also, Macduff has gone there begging
the king to start a war between Scotland and
    England.
  • Lennox asks the lord if Macbeth had invited
Macduff to his Banquet and the lord say yes, but
Macduff replied with Sir, not I.
  • Lennox says that if Macduff has any sense, he
will have caution with his distance of Macbeth.
  • The lord says that he will send his prayers with
    him.
