AIMS

• From Oct 2002 to Oct 2003 across the Yorkshire
  Cancer Network
• Number of blood transfusions and amount of blood
  used via the hospices
• Survival post transfusion

METHOD

• Blood transfusion services provided list of
  patients who had blood at hospice
• Hospices checked data and provided survival data

RESULTS - basic

• Conservative figures
• 164 patients
• 230 blood transfusions
• 650 units of blood

• Most transfusions were of 2 or 3 units of blood
• Majority of patients had 1 transfusion in the
  year, range 1 8.
• Blood transfusions involved in at least 3 9 of
  hospice admissions

• Median survival post blood transfusion
• 45 days
• Median survival post IP blood transfusion
• 36 days
• Median survival post OP blood transfusion

RESULTS St Gemmas

• 57 pts
• 75 blood transfusions (33 YCN total)
• Mean age 71 yrs
• 58 female
• Median survival 36 days post transfusion
• Barthel score decreased by 8 in week after
• No significant difference to a non transfused
  control population

CONCLUSIONS

• 164 patients had 230 blood transfusions
• 650 units of blood used
• Majority had 2 or 3 units, once as an IP
• St Gemmas and the Bradford hospices carried out a
  third of the networks transfusions each
• Median survival post transfusion 45 days
