Overview of Public Safety Memorials Across the
Nation

• 32 states have firefighters memorials
• 18 states have law enforcement memorials
• 7 states have peace officers memorials
• 4 states have police officers memorials
• 2 states have public safety or first responder
  memorials
• 11 states are in the planning or building process
  for firefighter memorials or law enforcement
  memorials

Overview of Public Safety Memorials Across the
Nation Cont

• Location Mostly these types of memorials are
  located on the grounds of state capitols or at
  training sites.
• Funding Private donations have been used to fund
  state memorials, however, some memorials are
  state funded.

Alabama Firefighter Memorial

• The Alabama Firefighter Memorial is located on
  the grounds of the Alabama Fire College.
• The purpose of the Memorial is to honor
  firefighters of Alabama who have given their
  lives in the Line-of-Duty.
• In June 2003, the House and Senate of the Alabama
  Legislature passed a joint resolution designating
  the Alabama Firefighter Memorial as the official
  firefighters memorial.

Arizona Peace Officers Memorial

• The Arizona Peace Officers Memorial is located in
  Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza.
• The Memorial was dedicated in 1988.
• The Memorial was erected by the state legislature
  and displays the names of officers killed in the
  line of duty.
• Police lodges are responsible for the Memorials
  upkeep and the addition of officers.

California Peace Officers Memorial

• The California Peace Officers Memorial is
  located in the Capitol Park in Sacramento.
• The memorial was dedicated in 1988.
• The memorial was designed by the California Peace
  Officers Memorial Commission created by the
  state legislature in 1985.
• To build the tribute, more than 200,000 was
  raised in private donations, primarily by the law
  enforcement community.
• The memorial consists of three bronze figures
  representing the more than 1,400 peace officers
  who have died in the line of duty since
  California became a state.
• The bronze figures depict a county sheriff of the
  1880s, a state trooper of the 1930s, and a city
  patrolman of the 1980s.

California Firefighters Memorial

• The California Firefighters Memorial is located
  at the Capitol Park in Sacramento.
• It was dedicated in April 2002.
• The memorial's design, construction and
  maintenance is financed entirely by donations
  made to the California Fire Foundation.

Colorado Law Enforcement Memorial

• The Colorado Law Enforcement Memorial is located
  in a small grove of trees by the State Patrol
  Academy.
• The Memorial was erected in 1979 as a tribute to
  Colorado's fallen peace officers.
• In 1999, a new wing was added to the Memorial.
• The names of 197 peace officers are engraved on
  the memorial.
• The Colorado Law Enforcement Memorial is funded
  by Shirley L. Brown, Chairman, SLB Company, Inc.

ConnecticutLaw Enforcement Memorial

• The Connecticut Law Enforcement Memorial is
  located at the Connecticut Police Academy.
• It was dedicated in 1989 after four years of fund
  raising efforts by the Connecticut Police Chiefs
  Association.
• The memorial honors all local, state and federal
  officers who had lost their lives while serving
  the citizens of the State of Connecticut.
• During the month of May of each year, a special
  memorial service, attended by several hundred
  people and many law enforcement agencies is held
  at the Memorial.

Connecticut Firefighters Memorial

• The Connecticut Firefighters Memorial is located
  at the Connecticut Fire Academy in Windsor Locks.
  
• It was dedicated in 2002.
• The cost of this Memorial was 250,000.
• The design of the Memorial was conceived by the
  Connecticut Firefighters Memorial Committee
  incorporating a plaza-like setting, featuring a
  brick patio in the form of the Maltese Cross.
• There are over 300 names engraved onto the base
  of the centerpiece of the Memorial.

Florida Fallen Firefighter Memorial

• The Florida Fallen Firefighter Memorial is
  located at the Florida State Fire College in
  Ocala.
• The Memorial was dedicated in 1992.
• This Memorial was made possible through private
  funding.

Georgia Public Safety Memorial

• The purpose of the Georgia Public Safety Memorial
  is to honor Georgia's law enforcement officers,
  firefighters, corrections officers, emergency
  medical technicians and emergency management
  agency personnel who have died in the line of
  duty.
• The Georgia Public Safety Memorial is located at
  the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in
  Forsyth.
• It was dedicated in 1997.
• The Georgia Public Safety Memorial Committee
  developed the criteria for inclusion on the
  Memorial.

Idaho Peace Officers Memorial

• The Idaho Peace Officers Memorial is located at
  the Idaho State Police Headquarters.
• The Memorial was dedicated in 1998.
• Funding for the Memorial comes from private
  donations, the sale of special State of Idaho
  license plates, memorial bricks, and an
  assortment of memorial clothing items.

Illinois Police Memorial

• The Illinois Police Memorial was erected on the
  northeast grounds of the Capitol Complex and
  dedicated in October 1990 in Springfield.
• For more than two decades, police officers from
  across the state have gathered in Springfield for
  the annual Illinois Police Memorial ceremony in
  May to honor their fallen comrades, whose names
  are added to the memorial.
• Funding for the memorial came from private
  donations and the State of Illinois offers Police
  Memorial license plates.

Iowa Firefighters Memorial

• The Iowa Firefighters Memorial is located in
  Coralville.
• In 1990 the Iowa Firemen's Association
  commissioned a bronze memorial sculpture.
• It was dedicated in 1994.
• The Iowa Firefighters Memorial includes several
  statues, a memorial wall, and a visitor center.

Kansas Law Enforcement Officers Memorial

• In 1984, the Kansas Legislature established the
  Kansas Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
• The memorial, located on the grounds of the state
  capitol, is tribute to law enforcement officers
  who have lost their lives in the line of duty
  while in service to the state.
• The Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Advisory
  Committee determines the inclusion process for
  additions to the Memorial.

Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial

• The Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial is located
  in front of the Department of Criminal Justice
  Center.
• The Memorial was dedicated in 2000.
• Recently, they have began to run out of space on
  their current memorial for additional fallen
  officers. In order to continue honoring these
  individuals, the Kentucky Law Enforcement
  Memorial Fund has started a fund raising campaign
  to cover the relocation and expansion of the
  current memorial, with a projected cost of
  200,000.

Louisiana Law Enforcement Memorial

• The Louisiana Law Enforcement Memorial is located
  in the Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery in New
  Orleans.
• The Memorial was dedicated in 2002.
• The Louisiana Law Enforcement Memorial cost
  70,000.

Louisiana Fallen Firefighter Memorial

• The Louisiana Fallen Firefighter Memorial is
  under construction. It is located in Baton Rouge.
• The memorial will consist of three main areas
  the Roll of Honor, a large granite wall listing
  all known firefighters who have perished in the
  line of duty a firefighter statute and a fire
  engine bell.
• The Fallen Firefighter's Memorial is funded
  entirely by private and corporate contributions.

Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial

• The Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is
  located next to the State House in Augusta.
• The Memorial was dedicated in 1991.
• The Maine Chiefs of Police Association raised the
  funds for this Memorial.

Maryland Fallen Firefigher Memorial

• The Maryland Fallen Firefighter's Memorial is
  located in Annapolis.
• It was dedicated in 2006.
• The cost of the Memorial was 850,000 the
  Maryland Fire-Rescue Services assisted with the
  fundraising efforts through the sale of inscribed
  bricks for the plaza and by securing funds from
  the State of Maryland.

Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial

• The Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial is in
  the planning stages.
• The memorial will be located on the State House
  grounds.
• The projected costs to build and maintain the
  memorial is one million dollars, raised through
  grants and donations from the community and law
  enforcement organizations.
• The memorial will include state and local police,
  federal, sheriffs and correctional officers.

Michigan Law Enforcement Memorial

• The Michigan Law Enforcement Memorial is in the
  planning stages.
• The projected cost of the memorial is 3 million.
• To raise funds for the memorial, the Michigan Law
  Enforcement Official Memorial Monument Foundation
  is selling memorial coins.

Minnesota Peace Officers Memorial

• The Minnesota Peace Officers Memorial is in the
  Capitol Mall in St. Paul.
• The Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial
  Association was formed in 1974 with the sole
  purpose of building a memorial to Minnesota peace
  officers who had died in the line of duty.
• In 1977, the granite memorial was erected in the
  main concourse of the Minneapolis-St. Paul
  International Airport.
• The memorial remained on display there until it
  was moved to its current location on the capitol
  grounds in St. Paul.

Nebraska Law Enforcement Memorial

• The Nebraska Law Enforcement Memorial is in the
  planning stages.
• The memorial will be located at the Nebraska Law
  Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island.
• The purpose of the Memorial is to help families
  and survivors heal and to serve as a reminder to
  law officers-in-training, of the importance of
  their profession.

New Hampshire Law Enforcement Monument

• The New Hampshire Law Enforcement Monument is
  located in front of the Legislative Office
  Building in Concord.
• It was dedicated in 1998.
• The memorial honors New Hampshire law enforcement
  officers who have died in the line of duty.

New York Police Officers Memorial

• The New York Police Officers Memorial is located
  at the Empire State Plaza near the State Capitol
  Building in Albany.
• The memorial is a result of legislation proposed
  in January 1989.
• A remembrance ceremony takes place at the
  memorial every May.

New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial

• The New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial
  is located in Empire State Plaza in Albany.
• It was dedicated in 1998.
• Funding for the memorial was allocated in equal
  amounts by the Legislature and the Governors
  Office.
• The purpose of the Memorial is to honor the
  memory and heroism of all New York State
  firefighters who died in the line of duty.

North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Memorial

• The North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Memorial
  is located at Nash Square in Raleigh.
• It was formally dedicated in 2005.
• Funding for the Memorial came from private
  donations.

• The North Dakota Peace Officers Memorial is
  located in the State Capitol grounds.
• It was dedicated in 1994.
• The Memorial is devoted to the memory of those
  Peace Officers who have given their lives in the
  line of duty.

Ohio Fallen Firefighters Memorial

• The Ohio Fallen Firefighter's Memorial is located
  on the grounds of the State Fire Marshal in
  Reynoldsburg.
• It was dedicated in 1997.
• It serves as a remembrance to those who have made
  the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
• The project cost 30,000 and was paid for through
  a series of donations spearheaded by the Ohio
  State Firefighter's Association in cooperation
  with the State Fire Commission and the Division
  of State Fire Marshal.

Ohio Police Fire Memorial Park

• The Ohio Police and Fire Memorial Park is located
  in downtown Columbus.
• The Memorial Park serves as a permanent tribute
  to the heroic contributions that Ohio's police
  officers and firefighters make to our society
  every day and to honor the memory of those who
  have fallen in the line of duty.
• The park is funded solely by private donations.

Oklahoma Law Enforcement Memorial

• The Oklahoma Law Enforcement Memorial is located
  on the grounds of the Department of Public Safety
  Headquarters in Oklahoma City.
• It was dedicated in 1969.
• The purpose of the Memorial is to honor the
  service of all law enforcement officers and the
  sacrifices made by our fallen officers and their
  families in that service in the State of
  Oklahoma.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Memorial

• The South Carolina Law Enforcement Memorial is
  located on the State House grounds.
• In 2004, the state legislature passed a bill that
  provided 500,000 for the Memorial.

Texas Peace Officers Memorial

• The Texas Peace Officers' Memorial is a monument
  located on the grounds of the Capitol Complex.
• It was dedicated in 1999.
• The purpose of the Memorial is to recognize and
  honor the ultimate sacrifice made by Texas law
  enforcement and corrections officers who were
  killed in the line of duty.
• Fundraising for the Memorial took ten years.

Utah Law Enforcement Memorial

• The Utah Law Enforcement Memorial is in the
  planning stages.
• The Memorial dedication is scheduled for in May
  2008.
• The projected cost of the Memorial is about one
  million dollars.
• Donations are being solicited largely from the
  private sector, but also from the State of Utah.

Vermont Emergency Services Memorial

• The Emergency Services Memorial is located at the
  Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford.
• It was dedicated in 2003.
• It honors all fallen Fire, Police, EMS and
  Corrections Officers who gave their lives serving
  the people of the State of Vermont.
• This Memorial is funded solely by private
  donations.

Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial

• The Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial is
  located in the State Capitol grounds in Olympia.
  
• It was dedicated in 2006.
• The Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial
  Foundation raised over 425,000 for the Memorial
  construction.

Washington State Fallen Firefighters Memorial

• The Washington State Fallen Firefighters'
  Memorial is located at the Fire Training Academy
  in North Bend.
• It was dedicated in 1985.
• The purpose of the Memorial is to recognize
  firefighters who have died in the line of duty
  giving unselfish service to their communities and
  Washington State.

West Virginia Fallen Firefighters Memorial

• The West Virginia Fallen Firefighters' Memorial
  is located in the Capitol Complex in Charleston.
  
• Dedicated to West Virginia Firefighters who died
  in the line of duty by the West Virginia
  Firemens Association in 1994.

Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial

• The Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial is located
  on the State Capitol grounds in Madison.
• It was dedicated in 1998.
• Over 90,000 was raised by police departments
  throughout Wisconsin for the Memorial project.
